"The application's default library cannont be created" after installing 3.0.6

Can you describe a little more what's happening? Do you already have a library? Maybe there are permission issues with the directory we try to use. You can set a directory location in the preferences dialog.

ryan.omara March 09, 2011 06:53I wish there was more to explain. The program gives that error and won't open up. I do have some videos in my library that I have posted on your site. It worked well before updated, with only the occassional crash/freeze like most video software.EditDeleteRemove

Ok - can you try seeing if the permissions are open on the applications or program file directories? We might not be able to access it to write files for installation.
-
I just set every perfmission in the entire ContourStoryteller folder to "allow" and still no go.
-
-
I did the some for the ContourStoryteller folder in 'C:\Program Files' and for the 'Contour Library' folder in 'My Documents/My Video's'.
Both didn't resolve the issue. -
-
-
-
-
I don't think it's an issue with the Contour folder, but rather an issue with the program files folder.

I've only got this problem on a Windows XP Service Pack 3 machine. I installed the software on a Windows 7 machine and it works fine.
-
-
My operating system is Windows 7, Storyteller was working fine with version 3.05
-
-
-

Installed the software on two systems both running XP with SP3. One gives this problem the second one doesn't. Both use the same (network) location to store the Library. Maybe this helps finding the problem/solution
-
-
It seems like this is a database issue. If one of you can email support the countour.db file in the default location we can investigate it.
to get around the problem, you could try deleting the contour.db file and then reimporting the existing movies.
thanks -

Maurice, thank you for sending us this file. I assume this comes from the computer that shows you the error message. And you sent us the file from C:\Documents and Settings\[account]\My Documents. If you configured Storyteller to use the library on the network, and it failed to open this library, it should show you the attached message. Do you see this message coming up?
The database you sent to us was empty, so you could delete it without losing any data. If Storyteller does not find the database file (contour.db) it will just create a new one. But you would have to re-import the movies that are in the library location. Storyteller will not make a second copy of those movie files, and it should go pretty quick. We are still looking for the real reason you ended up with an empty database though.
Thank you! -
-
Holger, I have deleted the contour.db file and started storyteller again on the system that was giving the problem. A new contour.db is created in the directory N:\Mijn documenten\Mijn video's\Contour Library but I get the following message screen.
Storyteller won't start. The message you have included doesn't showup on my system. Other system I've installed the software on uses the same network directory but doesn't produce a problem. Hopes this makes any sence to you. -
-
I just had the same results as Maurice.
My contour video file was located in c:libraries/videos/contour videos. I renamed the contour file (old) and then attempted to start storyteller.
It created the new countour video file but storyteller still would not open and i received the same error message as Maurice above. -
-
I just emailed the original db file and the one created after the updgrade to support@contour.com
-
-
We just determined that single quotes in the library path name can cause this message. Maurice reported a single quote, this is what helped us finding this. Maurice, can you please try it again with a path that does not contain a single quote?
Now blshaw, you say your library path is "c:\libraries\videos\contour videos"? No single quotes there. And you're on Windows 7, correct? Is this the English version of Windows? -
-
blshaw, I just tried out the same library location you use, but no luck in trying to reproduce the problem. Thanks for sending the database files to support. Once they are handed over to the development team we will investigate them. It would be helpful to know which Windows language you are using. Thanks!
-
-
-
-
-
-
Ah, I see there is a single quote in your path, blshaw. Can you please try it out with a path that does not have a single quote? I am sorry for the inconvenience, we will have to support single quotes.
Ryan, is there a single quote in your Vista Home user account? Something like blshaw has in "Shaw's"? If so, could you also please try a location that doesn't have a single quote in it? Thanks much! -
-
I've changed the directory name so it's without a single quote. Removed the contour.db and started storyteller again. This time it worked fine. Seems indeed that the single quote in the path is causing the problem.
Since a single quote is used in a lot of European languages many might run into this problem if they are on XP.
Thanks for looking in to this support team! -
-
Thank you very much, Maurice! Yes, we need to fix this quickly, quotes should be allowed in the library path. Thanks again for taking the time to try out a path without quote.
-
-
Ok, so single quote is my issue. C:\Users\Ryan O'Mara\Videos\Contour Library However, I changed my user account name the using user accounts control panel, however the file path remained the same. How do I change the files paths?
-
-
Ryan, you can change the location of Storyteller's library in Storyteller's Preferences dialog. Note, you don't have to change your Windows user account name, as long as you use a library location that doesn't have a single quote in it (i.e. c:\Contour Library). Thanks!
Holger-
So how do I change the library location in Storyteller's Preferences if Storyteller won't open???
-
-
-
-
-
Ryan, you are correct. With a single quote in the user account name, Storyteller will only show this message box and then close. We are now discussing this internally.

1Here is a work-around that gets Storyteller 3.0.6 working on a Windows account that contains a single quote:
1) Download this file: http://public-access.vholdr.s3.amazon...
2) Copy the file to your Contour library directory (C:\Users\[account name]\Videos\Contour Library
3) Launch Storyteller. It should work now.
Can I ask one of you to please try this out and report back to this thread? That would be great! Thanks!-
I was having the same issue with 3.08 using Windows 7 64 bit. This fixed my problem....thank you.

This work around took care of the job.....storyteller 3.06 is up and running. Thanks!
-
-
-
-
Success! I had to reimport the videos in the library, but that was no biggie.
-
-
for me it's even worse :/
my username is without a quote, but since i live in the netherlands, the 'videos' folder is called 'mijn video's' and since that contains a quote even the workaround fails :(
only a 'run as administrator' seems to work here.-
Daman, de contour.db update van 4 post hierboven zou de oplossing moeten zijn. (sorry for the dutch)

Hi Holger,
I have just installed the 3.0.6 software from scratch and I am getting this error. I dont have any previous versions of the software installed. I dont have an apostrophe in any of the file path either. Can you please help? I need to get in and configure the camera.
System
Win 7 64B
c:\Users\[account]\videos\contour library
I manually created the library folder and installed the file above in an attempt to resolve the issue.
I have also tried running the EXE as administrator. -
-
I am running MAC OSX. Just installed 3.08 and have this problem. Uninstalled storyteller and reinstalled. Have the same problem.

Administrator? Maybe this is there for MAC. I deleted the DB and the problem went away. Found the DB in My User Folder under the Movies folder under the Contour Library folder.

Hi scowner,
Thats good to know that you have it working now. If you want to check your account status,go to the apple logo at the top left of the desktop and click on that. Now click on "system preferences" and in the window that pops open you will see accounts listed there, click on that and it will show you the details of the accounts on your machine. I hope that helps.
Cheers,
Dave. -

Hi HIMark Racing,
Well, that was easy for me ! THanks for letting me know that you have it sorted now.

I have a Mac and it was doing the same thing. When I downloaded the program it automatically went to the downloads folder that is located in a single quote folder. When I copied it to the desktop and executed the installer from there it installed properly and runs fine. It does not like single quote file folders. What a PIMA this was. It took me 2 hours to find this thread and make it work. This info should be on the Download Page.

Hi Noodle,
The engineers are working on this issue an d will hopefully have a fix for it in the next release of Storyteller. Could you let me know what Mac and version of OSX you are using so i can pass this on to them to make sure is addressed in the next release.
Cheers,
Dave. -

I had a video in my library that was casuing this error message. I simply deleted the problematic video and the library DB and it opened without any hitches

I'm not sure what the issue was with the vid, I had edited the footage in premier and then exported to a h2.04 .mov video file and imported it into Story teller, Then this issue arose.

Hi louis,
Thanks for the info, I will pass this on to the engineers to see if they can discover the cause. If they need the file do you still have it on your computer?
Cheers,
Dave. -

I am also running MAC OSX. Just installed 3.08 and have this same problem as others. Everything worked fine before the update. Uninstalled storyteller and reinstalled several times. I moved installer from the Downloads folder to the desktop as previously suggested but continue to have the same problem. Can you PLEASE walk through the steps to fix this on a Mac? This is a major pain...

rock45: Can you please do this:
1. Tell us the path of your "Movies" directory. In Finder (file explorer), click on "Movies" and the path will be shown in the very top of the window. I.e., for me it is "/Volumes/MAC_DATA/Users/holger/Movies".
2. Is there a directory "Contour Library" in your Movies directory?
3. If you found it, rename the "Contour Library" directory to something else.
4. Launch Storyteller and see if it works now. If it works, import the movies from the directory you renamed in (3).
Sorry this is given you trouble.

Hello;
I have the same problem on my MAC running Lion OSX 10.7.2, but I can't find any Contour Library in the Movies directory, What shall I do ?-
Hi slacha,
Are you listed as admin on your account on the Mac? If so I would suggest that you remove Storyteller and try reinstalling it again. Let me know what you find.
Cheers,
Dave. -

Hi Dave;
Yes I am admin. I already re-installed Storyteller a few times and always get the same ' app default library cannot be created' error message :-(
