Contour Storyteller and GPS data
Does Contour Storyteller allow you to view the altitude and speed of your GPS data live within the software itself?

Currently, the Contour Storyteller software will display your route live on a google map. However, as some of you know, the new Storyteller software does not display your altitude and speed unless you have uploaded the video to our website. This is working as intended at the moment BUT we are working on a new release of the Contour Storyteller software that will allow you to view the altitude and speed information live without having to upload your video to the website. Please hang tight as this feature will be releasing soon!
Thank you for your patience and continued support of the Contour GPS!

I bought the Contour+ based on a trade show demo a couple of weeks ago. The demo I saw had speed and altitude projected on the bottom of the video. I am interested in GPS data, but I have no interest in Google maps. I know the GPS works; I can get Google maps anytime. The GPS options in the Storyteller menus are greyed out. Product is great, but documentation is a bit weak.

The Contour website says the latest firmware update is 1.17. In StoryTeller, my camera has v 1.33. How's that?

Hi bestinflight,
I assume that as you have 1.33 then you have a Contour+ camera. When you connect the camera to your computer and start storyteller, you should see the camera listed up on the left hand side bar, click on the icon and then select tools from the tool bar at the top of the window. From the dropdown menu you can then select the configure camera utility and in there you can adjust the GPS settings on the camera. When you wish to extract a GPS track , first you will need to open the particular video that you wish to extract the data from and then you will find the GPS options will be active. I hope that helps.
Let me know if you need any further help though.
Cheers,
Dave. -

Yup, GPS receiver is very weak. (((

I'm having the same issue. Some of my files include the GPS data but some do not. I have a solid red light when recording. Am I missing something?

*i think so* but will check again.
this leads to my overall frustration: that simple instruction is not included in the manual. (see pages 2-3 specifically)
is there a manual or instructions for StoryTeller? -

Did something change with the new Storyteller? (3.0.4.817)?
I no longer get valid GPS data on it?
In the preferences, if I have it set to play with media player, I see the data flash. I can also export the data with other software but if I try with storyteller, it says invalid GPS data...
I am also running FW 1.10, but think the problem is with storyteller.-
The issue is with FW 1.10, reverted to 1.09 until support gets back to me

I also have a Contour GPS and have recorded several outdoor videos with it. Most of them in wide open areas without any obstructions. The camera configuration says that the GPS power is ON, but none of the videos have any GPS data when loaded into storyteller. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this is the reason I got this version of the camera ;-)

David,
Thank you for your quick reply. I took the camera back out today and tried several times to get a lock in an open area. The first time, I did the hidden button reset trick. It locked after 4 minutes. I turned it off and back on. This time it took 7 minutes to lock. A third time only took 2 minutes. Then the fourth took 4 minutes. All seem a bit long to me. By locking, I mean that the device comes up with the bottom from led flashing green. It is "locked" when it stops flashing, and you get a steady green correct?
I tried taking a few videos like this. But when I load them into StoryTeller, the "Map View" button is always greyed out. If I go up and select "Tools->Export Movie GPS...", I always get the message "No valid GPS data found in this movie."
I have upgraded the camera to firmware 1.10. It was 1.9 when I got it.
StoryTeller is version 3.0.4.817.
When I configure the camera, the GPS power is ON for both position 1 and 2.
Thanks for your help.
Cheers,

Just found this other Question. It looks like the problem that I am experiencing. I will start monitoring that as this is a duplicate.

it seems like the "did it lock?" is the standard answer to all these problems, but doesn't address the issue that the camera doesn't lock with any consistency.
is this being addressed? (seeing as it is part of the product NAME it should be recognized as one of the key features triggering a purchase.)-
Hi horhayd,
The reason we ask if the camera had a GPS lock is because if it failed to achieve this then the data will not be there and as a consequence the mapview will not show in storyteller. However if the camera did achieve a lock and the mapview is not showing then there is something amiss that will need us to look into. You can use the gps export function in storyteller to see if there is any data there to establish if a lock had been gained.
We have found an issue that is being addressed at the moment regarding lock stability in some units, we obviously will let you all know when we have this addressed fully. I hope that is of some help to you?
Cheers,
Dave. -

i understand the need for the GPS lock. my problem is not obtaining one in wide open spaces, so i am hoping for some sort of fix to this.

Hi horhayd,
The guys are hard at work on this at the moment so expect a fix in the very near future.

Will a new version of the s/w allow you to export the video with the gps data at the resolution you film it in?
I'd basically like to have a local full resolution version of what I'm able to upload to the contour site.-
Hi skibum-za,
Are you wanting to play the videos on a website with the GPS data showing a mapview?

Hi skibum-za,
You will be able to play the video part but not the mapview as it requires to be connected to the internet for it to work properly. You could use the Dashware program to superimpose the GPS readout on to the video, it just wouldn't show the map only the speed etc. Does that help?

I guess that would help. I'll have a look at Dashware.
But still, if the software on your server can add the map view, there is no reason, why we can't run something on our own pc's that embed that same map view into the video.
I'm sure there will be some videos, that I'd love in full resolution with the map embedded. Well I hope there will be ;) -

Hello David, it's seems that you are the only one whom is dealing with the Contour GPS problems, and I'll try to make it simple, I purchase one of those cameras in Jan, and I'm having all the above problems, and more.
This is my second camera and it seems that it's getting worse every time, so despite of all the problems described above, i have had "green" videos with no data at all, so GPS signal is completely out of question.
In addition, the camera gets hot, even the second one... that's right, IT GETS HOT, and on the beginning I was thinking that was because of weather, sun light, temperature, etc, etc... you name it, but i recently noticed that even during cold and cloud days, the camera gets hot and sometimes take up to 1 hour or more just to up-load 15 to 18 minutes video clip... What's up to that?
PS: This is not a bit-up comment, but I invested a good money on the camera with many accessories to use on the motorcycle at the track, the season starts in March, and It seems that I won’t be ready having all kinds of problems.-
Hi GSXRV1000,
Well i have some good news for you, we are about to release new firmware and software that will sort these issues out. During testing of the beta versions all of the issues raised here have been addressed and should have you getting a better experience. The camera will get warm when the GPS is active but never hot. What sort of battery time are you seeing ? As it may be a faulty battery, does it get hot during charging at all? To double check connect the camera to the computer with out the battery installed and see if it get hot again. Let me know what you find?
Cheers,
Dave. -

I just got a replacement ContourGPS last week. It did get hot - once - but I have a feeling it was because of the environment it was in. I ran it for an hour on my windshield mount, then turned off the recording function and slipped it into my coat pocket when I went in to work. When I heard the beeps signifying that it had timed out and powered itself off, a while later, I remembered that it was there and went to pull it out. At that point, it was quite hot - not enough to injure, but enough to definitely get my attention. The pocket in the coat is only a couple times bigger than the camera itself and is insulated, so I imagine that was the reason. I haven't had this camera heat up unexpectedly again since.

-
Also putting my vote in for imbedding the map view into the video, including video export!

The heating is now minimum, but i still have all kid of problems that i can't understand, from Storyteller, GPS Data, Movie without Data, Camera doesn't want to turn ON, or even not turning OFF, battery that last no longer than 10 minutes... and etc; maybe I'm too technical and expect things work well, or maybe I’m hunted by....
I like the Cam, it shows a potential to be the best on the market, however it needs an intense Up-Date, and I want to contribute to that, I use the Cam on my Track Bike at least 2 to 3 times a month for period of 8 to 9 hours, and i can provide tons of issues to be studied and fixed.
I'm not giving up just yet, something must be done, and if i can help, so I hope they can use me as a tool.-
Hi GSXRV1000,
Can you give me a few more details so I can assist you here? What Firmware is the camera running,What version of Storyteller you are using, Are you using a PC or Mac and what OS is it running (XP,Vista, Win7 or OSX and version of)? Also what cards are you using with the camera and how were they formatted? Your battery should last much longer than 10 minutes so you may well have a duff battery there, How long will it last for recording without the GPS active? Let me know what you find and lets see if we can get to the bottom of these challenges for you.
Cheers,
Dave. -

Hello Dave,
I wish to ask about my Contour GPS, firmware successfully updated to latest, operating beautifully, except for one problem.
In Bali, with a clear, cloudless view, or even in a boat about 10 km from shore, I get GPS data that lists altitude consistently 15 meters above where I think it should be.
Horizontal positioning is usually acceptably accurate, to within 3 meters from a known position.
I am sure that, at 1.85 meters tall, I cannot reach high enough to have the camera reading +15m when I am at sea level.
Since it is consistently 15m higher than my known altitude, I want to know if there is a way to calibrate the camera, or the display software, to compensate for the discrepancy?
Thanks for your time.

BTW, this error has existed from the start, even before any of the firmware updates, otherwise the camera works excellently.

Hi Brian,
Since I first posted my response I have done some further digging on this subject. It has become apparent that the GPS signal and altitude errors come hand in hand. This is due to the triangulation of altitude is harder to calculate accurately than the position on the ground. I have spoken to the engineers about this and they say that a 15M error margin on altitude is the smallest achievable error margin with the receivers we use.
Cheers,
Dave. -
