My ContourGPS is not able to get a GPS lock. I've tried:
removing and re-inserting the battery
fully recharging the battery
leaving the camera outside open to the sky for 15 minutes (several times, in two different locations)
-
Hi jharding,
Is the front LED flashing green whilst this is happening? If you are surrounded by tall buildings or other tall things it will take a while to get a good lock but 15 mins is a bit excessive. Could you let me know how you are getting on with it?
Cheers,
Dave. -
-
Yes, the front LED flashes green this whole time. I'm not surrounded by tall bulidings or anything - the most recent was with the camera out in my backyard (clear skies).

Hi rksr59,
Things have moved on since this thread was created. So long as you are running the latest firmware and that you have the latest Assistnow file on the camera you should be ok. If you prop the camera upright when trying to gain a lock that will also help. Let me know how you get on.
Cheers,
Dave. -

I do get a lock in rural areas, but I am not sure the green light stops blinking. I ́d need to check back.

Tried this twice tonight, but no luck. I got the quick orange flashes, but after 20 minutes, the front led was still slowly flashing green.

could you contact support http://contour.com/contact and they will sort you out from here.

I just got brand new Contour GPS. Does not get gps lock.
Upgraded firmware, did reset procedure described above.
Device has been on back yard, no tall buildings or trees around, for last 10 minutes. No lock. -
-
I had my GPS take over an hour to get a lock when biking on an open trail/roadway yesterday. Hopefully it'll lock quicker from here out.
-
-
Well I had the same issues with no GPS lock and was getting worried that the unit was faulty.
I'd done the firmware update (1.09) and reset the gps and on a crystal clear night it got a lock in 2 minutes. (last night left it out for a good 30mins)
So, it might be a case of perseverance and a good clear night to get that initial fix, I'm hoping this is just a one off blip. -
-
I have GPS in my car, phone, boat and on my Nikon camera, all of which 'lock' in a reasonable time. The 'lock' time on the Contour GPS is unaccepatable.
-
What challenges are you facing with the lock on your camera? If you could let support know http://contour.com/contact they will be able to work with you to get it sorted out. Once the initial lock has occurred it should achieve a lock within 30 seconds.

I have the same issue. Locked once, but now won't lock. Several resets have made no difference. After all the problems I have had with my HD 720 and HD 1080, I was hoping this version would be more reliable. This is not a good start.

where is the Secret button located in the Contour GPS? I have the same problem as all of the above complainant
-

Hi Anthony,
The secret button is located here
There is new FW out for the camera as well that should assist in the lock here http://contour.com/software/firmwaregps and here is a link to the release notes as well http://d2141htz9zn2s2.cloudfront.net/...
I hope that helps you out?

Dave. -

I have installed the new firmware (1.11). The GPS signal is not found.
I tried to get a GPS signal. I'm from Germany and want to use the camera in Europe. Works in Europe the GPS module?-
Hi Martin,
Yes it will work in Europe without issue. Have you followed the guidelines in the release notes on the best way to achieve a lock? http://d2141htz9zn2s2.cloudfront.net/...
Let me know how you get on.

Finally figured out why I wasnt seeing gps data even though I was asking Storyteller to update and it said you are on latest version by uninstalliing and reinintalling version 1.05 bingo we have GPS
-
-
I had a same problem but have fixed it.
1) update FW 1.11
2) GPS relset. For FW 1.11, remove battery more than 5 secs.
3) Power On
4) Waiting for green flashing LED become solid.
In 5 minutes, it's become solid.
I tried recording then I found StoryTeller show me video and GPS maps.- view 3 more comments

Follow up: contour shipped me a new gps. It is running the 1.11 firmware. I have used it 4 times so far. video mode once, elapsed mode 3 times. So far it has worked without locking up. 3 of the 4 times the gps locked right away. The fourth time after 20 minutes the gps did not get a lock. but it did keep taking pictures with out locking up. I turned the camera off and on and it got a lock right away.. So far the camera has not locked up. So with the exception of the failure to get a gps lock this am, it appears to be working fine. So apparently part of the issues I was having appeared to be related to the camera hardware. With the one video I took I did not see any problem with the quality of the Video, but then I could not see any video problems with the problem examples that were posted, and I did not have the Contour HD previously to compare video quality against. I Will follow up again if any thing of interest happens.

How do I install FW 1.11 as I don't have the 'secret button' on my contour GPS? Removing the battery doesn't help. I have the FW version 1.09, and storyteller version 3.05.
-
Hi gerwinbelt,
The secret button is hidden under the plastic in front of the record slider. You don't need to expose the switch , if you press just in front of the slider you should feel a small indentation, the button is in that indent. If you press that you will feel the switch operate. I hope that helps.

Guys I had similar experiences but then realised that most of the issues are Satellite and or cloud cover based I have been using my GPS now faultlessly and totally randomly sometimes it can pick up GPS instantly but sometimes you just have to wait also the accuracy of GPS is no in inchs its in feet if not more

Dear Dave,
I have tried to get a GPS fix for the past week without any success. I found out today, my cpu can't detect my Contour cam, but it can charge the Contour Battery,
I did the press hidden button and start procedure, without the firmware in my cam. But I was successful in making my Cam visible in my CPU. I then re-install the 1.11 firmware and redo the hidden button procedure. Hopefully tomorrow on my bike ride I can get a GPS fix, and by next week the new version of Storyteller will be out. So I can finally find out if I will return my Cam for replacement or not.-
Hi Anthony,
Keith and jonathan have been kept busy and away from here recently so it's only me about most of the time. If you send me an email to david@contour.com then I will forward you a beta version of fw1.12 to try with your camera.

Dave. -

Just purchased a contour GPS and the only problem I am having with the camera itself is getting a GPS Fix. All my software and firmware is up to date. In my backyard, on the road or in the valley I can't seem to get a fix. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Hi WillyGK,
I responded to you on the other thread you have commented on.

Tried it on this evenings ride and was able to get the GPS fix in my backyard and maintained it until I powered down. When I tried to re-establish the connection it just wouldn't take but that was probably the terrain.

I have the ContourGPS. The GPS used to work fine, but now all of sudden I can't get GPS lock anywhere (I'm in San Francisco, not near the tall buildings, and usually ride under open skies in Marin county).
I've tried everything discussed on this site (remove battery for 5 secs, hold upright, check that GPS power is on for both positions 1 and 2)... but that damn GPS light just keeps blinking.
Storyteller: V3.2.0.2468
FW: V1.17
O/S: Macbook Pro OS X Lion
How can I get GPS data back? Btw, my AssistNow just says "September 17, y" I assume that means today, but I've never looked at that before, and it's not giving me the year
Side issue:
On two occasions now, I've had the recording inexplicably turn off. It's not a battery problem because after I manually turn off the recorder (not realizing it stopped on its own) and turn it back on, it records no problem. Any ideas why this might be happening?- view 1 more comment

I had actually done that before making the comment. But I reformatted again:
-I removed the 16GB card
-I powered up and it triple beeped... however, the instructions say the re LED should flash red, but it flashed for of a green/amber color, and it says the front LED should flash red/yellow, but that LED flashed green.
-I re-inserted the 16GB card
-I used a pin to press in the hole and waited for the beep
-then I powered off and back on again
After doing this, I connected the ContourGPS to StoryTeller and it read "Last AssistNow Update on Camera: None"
I disconnected the camera, turned it on and off again, and re connected to StoryTeller.
Now it says "September 18, y"
Thoughts? -

Hi joshbenson,
It looks like teh assistnowfile isn't being put on to the card correctly, If you contact support they will be able to assist you with getting the correct file on there.

Contour, I recommend you stop selling units with a GPS. Your strength is with cameras not GPS. I suggest you offer a bluetooth interface to a gps/logger like Holux 1000c. Holux, among many others, know how to build functional and reliable GPS units.
-
Hi matelot,
Our GPS recievers are made by a respected GPS reciever specialist and these recievers are very acurate and reliable. The GPS signals though are not that strong and that is where the weakness lies. Once the camera has achieved as signal lock then it will retain that lock so long as there enough satellites visable to the camera and that the signals are not impeeded by any local enviromental restrictions.

Hi,
i have the same problem with my Contour GPS.
Green Light is still flashing (tried to get a GPS Fix more than 10 min.).
Camera is currently using FW. 1.18.
SD Card was formatted several times.
Battery removed several times for more than 10 min.
Camera tried at diffrent locations (Germany and Austria - both with perfect weather conditions - Austria during skiing above 2000m)
I am using the BT Modul to connect the Contour GPS to my iPhone. Contour App is working perfect and is showing 'GPS : searching'.
Any suggestions about this issue ?
Regards
Klaus-
Hi Klaus,
Can you tell me what the date of the Assistnow file is on the camera? Have you followed the advice in this FAQ http://help.contour.com/customer/port... as that should help you out with this. Let me know what you find.

Hi David,
thanks for your fast reply.
The AssitsNow-File was last updated 2 min ago. (Mo 12. Mrz 12:55:06 2012)
..the green 'GPS Fix LED' stops flashing when GPS is disabled using Storyteller.....after reactivating is still flashing :-/
Sure, i have followed the directions from http://help.contour.com/customer/port...

Hi Klaus,
Could you find a suitable place to put the camera and let it search for a signal, make sure that the camera is upright so the record switch is facing the sky. Let me know how long it takes to find a signal if at all. Have you had a GPS lock with the camera at all in the past? Let me know what you find.
Cheers,
Dave. -

Hi Dave,
several 'suitable' Places are checked.
Here at my home-location in germany, at Austria last 2 days also (attitude over 2000 mtrs), both with perfect weather conditions.
When i am using e.g. a external GPS Mouse and my iPhone 4 at the same locations, both devices are having no problems to find a GPS Lock.
I am not sure if the Contour GPS Lock works anytime in the past.
The Contour GPS was bought 3 weeks ago, during first Connection to Storyteller, i got the Info, that i have to upgrade the firmware .
The FW upgrade was successfully done without any problems.
I have made some Videos during our skiing in austria last weekend - now, after my returning to germany i am unable to 'see' the GPS Data - the SD-Card contains *.mov and *.thm files only.
The Contour iPhone-App is successfully connected to the camera. I am able to change all Camera-Settings. But the Contour-App is still showing 'GPS : searching' in the upper left corner of the screen.
May be a 'Downgrade' to Firmware 1.13 would help ?
Regards
Klaus-
Hi Klaus,
The GPS data is held in the video file itself, can you extract any data from the videos that you took with the extract function of Storyteller? Was the update bin file removed from the card after the update? I am just trying to understand why you are getting these issues, but I don't think a downgrade will fix this.
Cheers,
Dave -

Hi David,
got the message 'video does not contain GPS Data' - tried with all taken movies.
Downgrade to FW 1.13 doesn't help - reupgrade to current FW 1.18 doesn't help too.
A collegue with the same Comtour GPS is getting a GPS Lock within 15 sec. at the same locations.
Cam is now returned to reseller here in germany - hope to get a replacement with working GPS Fix in a short manner :-)
Thanks a lot for ur support.
Regards
Klaus-
Hi Klaus,
OK, Let me know how you get on with the replacement camera. Thanks for your patience.
