How do I change the Contour Library location?
How do I change the Contour Library location when I Import videos to Story Teller? I do not want to use the default location of C:\Users\(User)\Videos because my C drive is a SSD and has limited space.
-
It does not appear this is possible. There are no inherent setting in the StoryTeller application that provide the ability to change this. There does not appear to be a configuration file under Program Files and the registry also does not store this pathway. So, the guys at Contour will need to update this program to allow this ability.
It is a great suggestion and hopefully they will respond by making this change.

Correct, Birch.
It is not possible yet, but is on the list for consideration for the next release.

Hey abailor,
Your urgency is well noted and will be taken very seriously here at Contour. We currently plan on putting quite a bit of effort into ST over the next 6 months. Look for some very significant changes and additions in functionality.

Thank you, Keith. :)

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully we will see it soon.

These guys are doing a great job with their hardware and firmware. The lack of software functionality needs to be addressed, but the reality is they are not a software company. However, these forums show their commitment to listening to us, the customers. I expect great things from these guys with future updates.
Also, Contour...please provide release notices (and notes) on your site. You just released a new version of ST, but the only reason I found out was reading a post in the forum.
Keep up the great work and this community will continue to give you guys the feedback to enhance an already amazing product.

The posting issue is duly noted, Birch. Us support guys had the same comment. We will get it fixed. And thanks for the acknowledgment. You are right - we are not currently a SW company, but we are on that road. More to come from Contour in 2011. Much more.
-Keith-
Would also appreciate a change-log.. should be a std practice to list what has been changed/added/fixed since previous version

Another good idea. I'll pass it along to engineering.

Hi All,
I know this is may be a long winded affair, but for the mean time until this is sorted its an option, that is to create a new folder on the separate hard drive and drag and drop the files over to that when you have uploaded it or wish to 'store it' for later uploading. It's by no means a perfect solution , but it may suit your needs until we catch up on the software side of things.
Cheers,
Dave-
Dave,
I'm still finding my way around the tools here, but one thing I noticed was that the only way to play video from another source (Kodak ZX3 digicam) for comparison, contribution of a different POV, is to Import == copy into the Storyteller library folder. With video files being multi-GB, this is inefficient use of time and space. Storyteller should be able to work with multiple folders. I guess you guys are in the midst of a transition from a simple "import, clip and upload" tool to something more comprehensive? The single location *does* make it easier to *find* files imported from your camera. -

This is a great thread and some solid feedback. To add a few things...
- we're working on a downloads page that shows the latest version of the SW version and we can add notes about key features in it or changes. we'll work on it for the next release.
- i agree multiple libraries is a key feature, we just haven't been able to get to it in storyteller. we have it in easy edit, but we we're about two weeks away form adding this.
- with the multiple libraries we're working on making it simple for users to transition from easy edit to storyteller while having multiple library locations.
Thanks,
Marc -

I just purchased the ContourGPS and I saw that there is no way to import to library to a different location than C:\Users\\My Videos\Contour Library\. This is a huge problem for me due to my OS Drive (C:\) being a SSD drive with 30GB of space. It's already at 2GB free space without any videos imported which leaves me with no choice but to not use the storyteller software.

Hey staramir,
You are definitely heard! This is on our list of "to do's" for StoryTeller for the future. StoryTeller is indeed a work in progress. it will continue to get better and better.

Hey staramir,
We're working on this now. We've done a lot of the background work to put this in place, but are squashing other bugs at the moment. It'll be a few weeks, but you should expect this feature soon. I agree, it's a must have, especially with video.
Stay tuned. -

Just read throuth this thread, got my Contour HD 1080 2days ago (christmas) and been testing out camera settings. It's good to know you are working on this as i too need to put the files on a external Harddrive, have to say excellent product so far

I'm in the same boat as everyone else with an SSD system drive. I don't want to add more complaints to the mix, just add another voice to show that this is a pretty wide spread issue. I have had my camera for a few months and it has been great. The storyteller software isn't great but it does what it needs to do and offers some limited editing which is better than nothing. Keep up the great work guys, I know you are working hard to put out a great product. I have been pushing hard on the slopes to convince people that contour is the way to go and to leave those silly gopro units that look like a digital camera from 1993 on the best buy shelf.

Here is an alternative to all the other alternatives :) For those of you who have an SSD and are using windows 7 you can easily move the "My videos" and "My Documents" folder off of your system drive. Just open the libraries / documents folder. Click on the documents or videos button on the left hand side to expand the menu. Then right click on my documents or my videos and select properties from the menu that appears.
On the next menu go to the location tab and click move. Choose where you would like the folder to be moved to, and hit ok. It will ask you if you want to copy existing files to the new folder, click yes. And you are done.
If your system drive has limited space this a a great way to free things up a little. Hope it helps!

I looked into this before this thread began. DON"T DO IT!
This solution only works until the next time you reboot. Then the link is lost because the drive doesn't really exist until later in the boot process. If you do this and reboot, you will find that your "Videos" directory properties no longer has the tab that allows redirection. It, in effect, changes the type of directory it is. I'm still looking for a way to restore my Videos directory to it's prior state. -

You are correct that this does not work properly if you are using any sort of external or removable drive. It should only be used if you are redirecting to another internal drive on your computer.
To remedy your situation try this:
To change the location of the "Personal" folder in Windows 7:
1) Open regedit, and find the following entry:
"currrent_user\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders"
2) Look for the registry key "My Videos". The "Data" value is the path to your Personal ("My Documents") folder.
3) Change the value of the key to your preferred location.
That should give you back the my videos folder as long as it points to an existing folder. Also, my documents is referred as the "Personal" folder if you moved that also. Hope this helps. -

I absolutely agree, the user needs more control over the location the movies are stored. We are currently working on it, but didn't get it into the last release.
It is not a trivial thing on our side, because we want to offer multiple storage location while making sure it's still easy to keep track of all movies, even if they are on a removable drive that is not always plugged in.
We did not recognize the importance of making the single storage location a configurable setting, until you guys pointed it out in this thread. There is a new version coming out within the next weeks, and even if it won't have multiple storage locations yet, we will make the single storage location configurable.
And yes, release notes and a beta program is a good thing. Release notes will come, and a beta program is already discussed here. -
-
This last note says the storage location would be configurable in the updated software. I have the latest version of Storyteller (3.0.4.817), but can't find anything about configuring the library. This is a top priority for me. Like others, I have to ration space on my internal hard drive... so I want to have all my Contour videos stored on an external drive.

Hey crazytraffic99,
That feature is not quite there yet. It is high on the list for one of the next two releases through. Sorry for the delay - our StoryTeller dev team is working hard!

Hi, I have to change the directory as my C drive cant take any more data, but I have a 1Tb H: drive, would a reg hack help me? Please? Eric

I am also in the same boat. Seems quite silly that a software designer did not put this in as a basic consideration from the outset. Every application under the sun has an option as to where the data needs to be saved. Whether it be through a configuration option in the menu, a registry change or a ini file amendment.
I have similar sentiments regarding the GPS frequency and having to edit the Firmware config file, rather than being able to make the change throught storyteller. You can change every other possible setting within storyteller. I do understand that this is a new function but it was also released in conjunction with a Storyteller update.
Look forward to seeing the new releases and hopefully very soon. -
-
The good news is that you should be able to do this with the upcoming release of StroyTeller! It is due out within a week.
-Keith-
Keith, since this didn't make it into the 3.05 release of Storyteller, should we expect it in 3.06?
Thanks,
Matt -

Yes - it is the top priority for 3.0.6. We expect it out around the end of Feb.

I brought my laptop skiing with an external drive. My laptop has a 128GB SSD. This should be CRITICAL!

Again, the ability to change the library location is coming with 3.0.6. It is due out at the end of February.

erm... cough... sorry to keep this going but its march and i just downloaded the latest wersion from the web and i still cant change location.

Hi psimon,
we are on the cusp of releasing an even newer version and that should have the library location as being selectable by yourself. I hope that helps?
Cheers,
Dave. -

Building on what mesiah said above, in Windows you can change your My Videos folks and Contour will use that. The easiest way to do that is to use TweakUI.
-
-
Hey, at least you Windows guys can install the software. I'm on a Mac and don't have write access to the System Applications folder, only the User Applications folder. No Easy Edit or Storyteller for me!
-
Hi abenormal,
You can change the setting on your account to allow the write status, unless its a shared machine and you are not the admin on it.
Cheers,
Dave. -
