How do I clip and edit videos in StoryTeller?

Our StoryTeller software is currently in its infancy and does not yet offer these functions. These and other functions are high on our priority list for the future. Right now, StoryTeller will allow you to clip and upload portions of your video files, but has no real editing capacity, at least not quite yet.

    Hey tblchuck,

StoryTeller's editing function is weak right now, but it will improve. The ContourGPS is a leading edge product, and as such it will require a few tweaks along the way as no one has crammed this much functionality into a 5.3oz camera at this price point before. This is not an excuse, but a statement on the condition. As the innovator in the industry, we tend to bring these functionalities to the market very early and make a few improvements along the way.

With the power button, make certain you press it and release it quickly when powering on. There will be a delay of a second or so before the lasers activate. However, we discovered that many people having power button troubles were either holding down the power button or kept pressing it until the lasers activated. I'm not sure this applies to you, but it is something to keep in mind.

I just got a contourhd 1080p today. The only software I can find is Storyteller. Am I missing editing software somewhere? Or, is this it and it won't edit? I am totally bummed out if there is no way to edit.

    Hey detourgreg,

Currently Storyteller is the only software that we include with our camera. It is indeed not meant to be an editing software, quite yet! We have started to include tools such as the GPS export function which will allow users to take the GPS data out of Storyteller and edit it in third party applications so they at least have some way to work with the data. Hopefully this will suffice until we beef up the tools in Storyteller a bit. Thanks!

We do not endorse any particular third part editing package - it really comes down to what you want to do and how much you want to spend. The editor needs to work with .MOV files, unless you want to convert the files to another format. iMovie and Windows Movie Maker tend to be free programs includes with Macs or PCs and very capable of basic video editing functions.

    • I use Windows Live Movie Maker. However I don't understand a lot of what I am doing. I was able to cut 8 random mins. out of an hour of film. added music. felt like a great job. However when I uploaded it to F/B only the film loaded. No music ! ! ? ? I still have the 8 mins. with music in my P/C. Looked for help every where- - - no help... Still learning not giving up. KEEP GROWING CONTOUR- - -THIS GUY THINKS YOU ARE THE BEST.....

Yeah I understand it's a new concept, it's a new product, but come on. One would think the editing software that goes along with these cameras would be cutting edge or at the very least functional. Looking forward to the new stuff, but in the mean time... Weak

    • Hi Tahoe Charlie,
If it was only that easy to do in that time frame, one particular challenge is that of GPS data and keeping it intact during the clipping process, not to mention the constant amusement of different operating systems and the individual requirements of each one. If only everyone was operating the same computers with the same OS onboard and all had exactly the same set up, then perhaps less than a month would be doable. What you describe is basic editing and that is what we are aiming for as soon as we can make it so. We are evolving the program , so that we add one or two things at a time to make the transition as easy as possible.
      Cheers,
      Dave.
    • Ok, editing to me is changing the bit stream, color, contrast, fades, etc; not just clipping chunks out. I really don't care about the GPS data at this time, I rename extension to mp4 (to get rid of the "white text" overlay) and post to YouTube for my friends. Operation Systems should have NO effect on vid playback: AVI is AVI, MOV is MOV etc

    Hey iceclymbrr,

Point taken and well understood. In it's current state, though, we really do not consider ST an editing software. It really is a camera configuration tool, clip viewer, and file uploader (to the Contour site).

use windows live movie maker. its a free download, and it works. just make sure you reboot and keep all other processes closed before you render the video. and if you have a Mac, you probably don't have an issue. if you do have an issue with video editing on a Mac, you should become a potato farmer.

Whatever program you used to use can edit the .mov stream, but you need a frameserver to act as a intermediary. This sounds very difficult but it isn't if you have a basic knowledge of computers.

Get yourself this freeware program: AviSynth http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/Main_Page and install. Then you need to create a script. There are numerous examples on the wiki page The script simply states which codec to use for displaying the movie.

You only need to create a projectfolder (if you use the same folder for projects, you just dump the VholdR .mov files there and rename the file you want to edit so you don't need to edit the script each time. It is not ideal, but it will help you edit these files without restrictions in any video-editor, both new and old).

I use VirtualDub to do the editing but it can also be Adobe or Sonic. VirtualDub is quite extensive btw, some commercial programs might be easier.

I have searched for numerous programs to be able to edit these streams but I could not find any decent one. Sony Vegas Pro is expensive and simply clipping the stream is ridiculously difficult. Setting up a frameserver takes care of all your problems.

I have also seen a simple GUI to help create the .avs frameserver scripts through an application (just browse the main page of the above link for AviSynth Batch Scripter).

I found another freeware program that works very simple and that can edit these H.264 .MOV streams: http://free-codecs.com/download/MPEG_...

You need to install Apple's Quicktime 7 http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ and afterwards you can use Streamclip, it is pretty self explanatory and clips within seconds. I haven't had those nasty crashes I had with EasyEdit either.

Of all the programs I have tried and used, this is the simplest I could find.

It would be a good idea for more video extensions to be excepted by this site. I use several different video editing programs and it seems that .wmv files are the most common output file. Even windows movie maker outputs a great hd quality video but it seems all the video converting programs I tried lately greatly diminish the video after converting from .wmv it back to a .mov file. Just a thought.

Contour is such a great camera, but...
if i knew it worked with MOV files i would never buy it...
it ́s such a stupid format...
you ́ll have to install lots of programs, converters, codecs... bla bla bla... +quicktime +storyteller (witch has little few functions)
+50€ buying a editing program?? my windows has such a good one (movie maker) and i cant use it... great
    • Hi luisberi,
If you have Vista or Win7 as your OS then you can use Windows Live Movie Maker, this supports the Mov format. You can also just rename the file with the Mp4 file extension, I.E. file001.mov change to file001.Mp4 and it should work , it doesn't require a converter. Yes, storyteller is lacking at the moment , but it has been written to be improved and is under a steady process of becoming a more useful program. The reason some people have to install codecs is because the computer they are using requires some assistance to play HD video which is recorded in the h264 format (which is what the camera records into) , Windows media player will run the file so long as it has the correct codecs to decode the h264 files. This is why we have set a preferences tool for the player that storyteller uses to play back if you use it. I hope that has helped you a little .
      Cheers,
      Dave.

The cover on the Contour HD came off on my first ski run. The thin rubber that attaches the door ripped easily and the back came off at some point without much contact. Is this covered under warantee? Seems you need a stronger attachment.

Having bought a ContourGPS several weeks ago, it takes great skiing vids - too bad I can't send them to any of my friends. StoryTeller sucks, it won't even upload to Contour's own site - just locks up.

Why can't you people just add a simple "clip and join" function? I don't need to "edit" the vids, just shorten them and join a few together. This should be easy to add.

And why won't you tell us the name of ANY SOFTWARE that will work, whether or not you recommend it - JUST SOMETHING THAT WORKS!

When you go to download Quick time just click on the drop down box and find the right version, because there is alot of them, then click on download and you be watching your movies, it worked for me.

RLR: Looked at those two programs, too complicated; just want to click on vid select end points, clip, create new vid, then join several of these into one posting. Also running XP so many of the "edit programs" don't run on my laptop or recognize .MOV. Also DON'T want to CONVERT vid - loses quality; I paid for 1080, I want 1080 quality (actually I record in 720/60, better action detail)

Contour misleads it prospective consumers. In its own website it states:

    "Edit Your Story

We've simplified editing to an awesome button. Watch your video, press the awesome button at your favorite part, adjust the awesome section, and save your results.

The experience is fast and light so you can save your favorite awesome parts to watch later or post them online for your friends to enjoy."

Apparently, the awesome button will let you post certain sections of your video to the contour site, but wont allow you to save edited clips to your computer to post them elsewhere. This really bothers me.

The more I use this camera, the more it becomes evident that it was released before it had fully matured to the point where it should be sold.

I spoke to contour before buying the camera and they told me storyteller could edit. I have obviously been misled.

Please don't bother responding with, "THis is a great camera, if you want to edit, buy editing software."

I have editing software, I just did not load it unto my laptop because I was misled that story teller had the basic editing functions I needed to share my videos with others.

If contour promises editing software, they should deliver, not hedge with, "we are working diligently to make the functions WE PROMISED actually functional."

In addition, all my videos should have GPS and sound, which they do not, even though I am using a class 10 micro sdhc card. Apparently I am supposed to do research, download programs to test my card, and format it in specific ways (all of which I have done to no success) because the guys and contour couldn't do their job. As others have said, this is lame! Basically this thing is going pack and I am going with a better camera. Though it may be twice the price it will not provide the same amount of frustration. (You know what product I am talking about)

I am way to busy to start searching forums and scrounging for solutions. Frankly, the bugs should have been worked out. Contour: you have left a sour taste in my mouth and I doubt I will ever allow myself to be duped into buying another of your developing products because obviously you don't do the necessary work to spare your customers of all this extra work.

    You should be embarrassed!

    Hey esumsea,

If you Contour has no GPS and sound, please contact support directly if you have not already. We need to get you a working camera. It would be interesting to note if you have the same issues with the original 2GB card. This could be anything from an SD card format issue to a defective camera, but support should be able to get to the root cause fairly quickly.

Regarding the software, we make no claim that StoryTeller is an editing software - far from it. It simply allows you to manage your camera settings, archive video clips from your camera in a limited fashion, and save portions of clips to our website for sharing. We currently do plan on adding additional functions later on, but we do not have a schedule or any guarantees on what will be released or when. I am truly sorry you feel as if we mislead you on this topic - I will certainly pass your input to the people in our company who generate the product content.

    Thanks for your feedback.

There is a third party product that can use the GPS data as well - it is called Dashware. If you do a search on this site, you can get information on it. Other than that (at the moment), the GPS data will show when played on StoryTeller or on our website. However, we are working on a GPS export function that will allow you to export the GPS data, edit your video in another program, then import the GPS data again. However, the GPS data probably will not exactly match what is going on with the video due to the editing.

    -Keith
    • Hi Keith,

I am considering the purchased the ContourGPS/Contour+ & still confused after reading all the forums about the StoryTeller doing and export with a Map/Speed Overlay either like the ContourUpload or Dashware app.

Is the software going to be able to do these? That particular item is the most important thing for me to do so I can have a home made video with the overlays of speed/map/altitude... Or as of 8/28/2011, the $50 Dashware is the only way to get that? Thank you CW
    • Hi chesterwu,
Storyteller will only put the map overlay on the video when it is played in Storyteller itself, as the program accesses the internet and google maps to make this work. Whereas Dashware will put up the gauges and a trace of your route actually on the video file itself , but it wont have a map view displayed. I hope this helps.
      Cheers,
      Dave.

Can anyone tell me what program to add music to the clips, and make a short video, like are done on the contour site, then if there is no software to edit the video's? How have they done it, or is is the people that send it in???..

    • Hi Pompeymonkey,
You can use many different programs that are out there on the web. Some are free and some cost. It does depend on what you are after. If you are using a Mac then you will have iMovie already, however this may require upgrading to iMovie 11 if you are on an earlier version. If you are on a PC then you can try Windows Live Movie Maker ,so long as you are running Vista or Win7. I personal favourite of mine is NCH video pad, which is free, as it is quite a versatile program which can be extended if you purchase the full version, the free version is good to learn on though. Have a cruise on google for free editing programs and see what you find, try a few and see what you get on with. I hope that helps.

i don ́t want to convert, and lose quality. i didn ́t want to, but it seems i ́ll have to spend some cash and buy a new edit software...

    keep on ́MOV,,, great format
    • Hi luisberi,
Usually its the lack of codecs on your computer that will stop programs from running the mov file the camera produces. The files are a standard H264 AVC/ACC format file in a MOV container, so they should work in most programs. You can download the k-lite codec pack (full version) from here http://www.free-codecs.com/k_lite_cod... , this should assist your computer. Take a look at NCH video pad and MPEG Streamclip as well, these are two programs that I know do work combined with the k-lite codec pack as I have them both installed on my PC running XP. Both of those programs are free as well, you do have the chance to upgrade the NCH video pad by purchasing it if you desire. Let me know how you get on.
      Cheers,

  • Hi pandbmotorsports,
The software will presently allow you to upload either a full video or a section of a larger video to the site and does as we advertise, but we are adding further features as the program evolves . These features will create more options upon future releases and refine the overall experience for the customers. In the mean time we can guide you toward more in depth editing programs which you may find useful should you desire to do more than edit sections out of the video and post them on to the site.
    Cheers,

If you run XP, you are screwed. ST will only allow you to upload the full video or a single "clip". You can NOT combine clips or do ANY other editing. Also most 3rd party editing programs will NOT run under XP. I ended up buying a new i7 laptop with Windows 7 to replace my 5 year old one which didn't have the horsepower to edit HD video streams. I still throw away the GPS data since YouTube can't use it.
    • Hi Tahoe Charlie,
You will be able to run MPEG streamclip in XP as this program can retain the GPS data and is free, as will Quicktime Pro but this requires a purchase. Also NCH video pad will work in XP as well but that won't deal with the GPS data. So you do have options available to you if you are running XP . I hope that this helps a bit.

dude this is software is bull i import all my vids into it expecting to be able to access them without having to keep another copy in my mac turns out you cant do anything but watch it on a laggy ass application and upload it to this site...i wanna upload it to fb but i cant now
    • Hi thribit,
You don't have to use Storyteller , we provide it as a basic piece of software for the new customer to upload to the site, as well as adjust the settings on their camera. You will find all of your videos in the contour library on your account on your Mac. If you delete Storyteller from your computer then the library stays put. You can import the videos from there in to iMovie and upload to youtube from there if that helps.
      Cheers,
      Dave.

I can't even figure out how to clips videos using Storyteller, like you could with the previous Easy Edit software. Like cut out a 10 minute section of a 30 minute video. Any help on this?
