Hi cwsurf,
The waterproof case for the ContourGPS is under development at the moment. We hope to have it available as soon as possible though.
Cheers,
Dave. -

The Waterproof Case isn't the same for the Contour HD and the Contour GPS ???
-
No the two cameras are different by the size of the record switch. The GPS will be having its own case to accommodate the larger switch.

Can you provide an update on when the waterproof case will be available for the GPS model please?
I'm hoping Santa would be able to grab one from me. -
-
Right now, we are expecting sometime in January for the WP case. However, until we get the prototypes out of the mold and tested, we won't know for certain.
-Keith -
-
Quicker is better. I'm going to Hawaii in February and would really like to get this in place...
-
-
Can you offer the specifications for the new waterproof case?
How deep will it be rated? Will I be able to take my Contour GPS scuba-diving to 120'?
Thank you,
Keith -
-
Hey Keith,
The specs on the WP case for the GPS camera will be the same as the existing case for the 1080p camera. The depth rating is 10 meters (33 feet), and the case is more intended for surface watersports or snorkling. A company called Emerald Diving distributes a custom scuba case for the GPS camera that is pressure tested to 400'. It is comparatively pricey, but it is a very well built housing that achieves very good results, especially compared to our biggest competitor. I have used this housing quite a bit myself as a do a bit of diving. See http://www.emeralddiving.com/H2OV.html for more information.

Hi Namesake,
Thanks for the quick reply and great news!
I'm heading to St. Thomas in March for the underworld and taking my Contour GPS!
Cheers! -

THAT should be AWESOME!! Diving our cold waters here in Seattle all year, St. Thomas sounds perfect! Enjoy!
-Keith -
-
Do you have an update on the availability of the waterproof case for the Contour GPS? Also once released how long before I can get on in the UK?
Thank you. -
-
It still looks like the end of March, earliest. Once released, we ship worldwide right away to our international distributors.
-Keith -
-
March.. Well, at least it's before the summer starts. Right..?

Looks like we should see these in early April....
-Keith -

That is the idea. Although summer in Seattle starts in late July and lasts about 2 weeks. :)

Hi,
I wanted to know if you're sure this waterproof case will be built (because I want to buy a Contour GPS for scuba diving but not under 10 meters.),
and if the price will be approximately the same as the waterproof case for Contour HD.
Thank you ...-
Hi romain.madeline57,
Yes, the case will be built, it is being tested at the moment, we still don't have a secure release date though due to the testing and how successful it goes. I will have to find out for you about the pricing on the unit though.
Cheers,
Dave. -

We are still expecting the waterproof case for the GPS camera out around the end of march/beginning of April. We do not have a definitive depth rating for the case yet either as it is still in testing.
-Keith -

Thank you verry much for this quick answer.
I will wait until early April.

Hi Romain,
The retail price will be $39.99 , the same as the case for the 1080. I hope that helps as well.

Put me down for one, need it for a trip April 5th so this is cutting it very close. Will you start a list? if so I want on it.

Hi orduner,
Sadly we don't have a list for the waterproof case, you will have to keep an eye on the site and the site shop to catch when they become available.

What will the discount be for those customers who already bought and registered the Contour GPS for the waterproof case?
I think you need to evaluate the frustration your customers have purchasing the GPS they can't use because there is no waterproof case.
Frankly I can't use the the Contour GPS for the video I want to do because there is no waterproof case available.
Do you recommend I return the GPS and purchase the Contour HD so it can be used in a water environment.-
Hi donbrown,
Im sorry that I don't see what you are driving at? We have stated that we were and are making a water proof case for the ContourGPS which will be out as soon as we can make it available. As it stands the case is making good headway through the process and we are looking at the approximate delivery date of late March early April.
There were a lot of engineering processes needed to make sure that case was going to be economic and functional, most of the engineering was down to the difference in the record slider and its operation when recording.
If you have pre ordered with a shop for the case, then they will obviously honour that, when they receive stock. We don't have a definitive delivery date as of yet because of the testing process.
Cheers,
Dave. -

I am frustraded cause the parties I viewed selling the waterproof case had "GPS" in the description and I assumed the HD case would work on the GPS case. I know you can't monitor what is listed by 3rd parties nor are you liable. The intended use for me to use the GPS is limited without the waterproof case.
But good improvements requires the GPS case to be taller and a new design is needed. The newer design and GPS features made me conclude the GPS is the best choice out there for video taping sledding in remote areas.
Anyway the gist is I bought the GPS to video snowmobiling instead of lugging a large camcorder. Snowmobiling season will "legally " end on public land in less than 30 days making my intent to use the GPS fully mute for this sledding season.-
Hi donbrown,
Aahhh i understand now ! Thanks for clearing that up for me. I understand your frustration now.

Just FYI use my CGPS out in the snow on a snowmobile without a water proof Case, it handles it just fine even if it gets sprayed with snow.

and you know this for a fact?....well its been almost 4 months and it works flawlessly....its not getting wet...if snow gets on it I just wipe it off and store it in a dry place.....no problems.

Hey! Saying it will be soon does not answer the question, it should remain unanswered or unresolved! So, it's late March, how soon? Thanks.

I am ready to buy a Contour GPS but just waiting for the availability of this waterproof case. When its all there I am on my way to REI!

OK - I just got an update on this. The revised target date is now mid to late April. Some tooling changes had to be made to improve the depth rating of the housing. Sorry gang! I wish the news was better.

When you say more tooling needed to meet depth rating was this to meet the initial HD case rating or an increase in rating to close the gap on the GP model? Greater than 10 m would be a nice step. Perhaps 50 feet would still allow the other vendor the ability to sell to scuba divers but the stock one would cover free divers and snorklers
-
-
I freedive to 120' so it sucks that they don't want to make everyone happy :( , I hate to go to the competition just cause of the depth capability. This cam is more streamlined for my purposes.
-
-
Stay tuned. We would like to rein in some of the scuba/free diving market for the setup. More to come in the next month.
-Keith -
-
120' is impressive, what are you doing at those depths?
I doubt you would switch to the competitor based on this criteria. I have seen footage from the competitor first hand and their rounded lense cover makes for some crappy underwater video. You would have to buy an aftermarket waterproof case for retail $100.00 to hit that depth and have a flat lense cover that does not distort the images.-
I will second that. I bought a GP, and am unhappy with quite a few things, including the underwater imagery. My Contour GPS should arrive tomorrow! I am looking forward to the WP cover and Android BT to be released. But more looking forward to playing with my new Contour GPS. Will have it on the airplane struts for the weekend
-
-
-
-
-
Yeah - th GP housing has a magnification system that is calibrated for air. It creates "fuzzy" video underwater. Even with the flat port, you get vignetting with all formats except 1080p.
-Keith -
-
I think it is to Contour's advantage to keep their customers and potential customers pleased with the GPS.
When an asccessory prevetnts a product from being used as intended does not help sales ... especially if a substitute is available.
Again I think a "discount" or "rebate" is very reasonable to help existing customers with coping with a product they can't fully use it without the waterproof case. -
-
@donbrown,
Sorry, gotta disagree.
Actually, customers can use the product. The accessory isn't preventing the product from being used. There are other waterproof cases available out there.
Contour provides a superior camera. The accessory is a bonus. There are plenty of other products on the market that don't provide accessories that customers desire. That doesn't prevent them from being used.
Its seems completely unreasonable that just because an accessory is unavailable Contour should provide a discount. Their main product and focus is the Contour camera. You do not have to have the waterproof case from Contour to use it. Even underwater.-
You declare the Contour GPS can be used underwater without a waterproof case from Contour? Who makes a case that fits the GPS besides the yet unreleased GPS? The 30 or more people I know who look at buying this are definitely not gonna cause the GPS will be ruined without a waterproof case.
I was gonna use the camera while riding snowmobiles, rafting, kayaking, surfing, boogie board , mud riding on the bikes and ATV's. Now I have to stop and get on the sidelines to use the GPS as the fun goes on around me ... without me. -
-
-
-
-
The ContourGPS is NOT waterproof in and of itself. We (Contour) will have a waterproof case available for the GPS camera. Target date is about a month from now. A third party company makes a hard-core scuba case for both the GPS and 1080p camera. It is expensive, but can withstand water pressure in excess of 400'. In fact, two of these housing accompanied a Nat Geo team on a record breaking dive to 636'! You can see more at: http://www.emeralddiving.com/h2OV.html. If you are not a hard core tech diver or have $400 to spend, you might want to wait for our case to hit the market. :)
-Keith-
I have to agree on the 10 meter depth thing. I'll probably never submerge my camera in water or at least not more than 2-3 meters, but if a cheap $16 Casio watch from Walmart can be water proof to 50 meters then surely it wouldn't be that hard or costly to make a case that was able to withstand 30 meters depths at a $40 price point.
Also I can understand the gripes about it taking so long to deliver this case to the market. Did you guy not think about this when you started developing the Contour GPS? The projected available date is now a full 7 months after the release of the camera. Regardless of the reason for the delay, something is wrong with the process when a basic accessory that is required for a large number of your customers to make use of the camera isn't available at the same time as the launch of the product. It's not only important for good customer moral, but just makes fiscal sense for the company.
As I'm sure you are already aware, the number of companies entering the wearable HD camera market is growing at an incredible rate. As the market gets more competitive and features homogenize things like this will be the only thing that stand between you and good customer retention.
Whenever I kick off the design of a new piece of software the very first thing we do is compile a list of things we've done wrong in the past. We discuss them and how to avoid making those mistakes again. -

Personally I am happy to wait if more time is needed to get it right. I am going on a trip to the south pacific in the middle of May so if its available by then all should be good. I appreciate your openness and willingness to keep us all updated Aquaman. For me the GPS is a nice addition to the camera and an option I am willing to pay more for should I want to use it but the underwater environment is the selling point for me. Snow is nice but I enjoy non-frozen water sports more.

I agree I'd rather wait a bit and make sure it right than rush it to market and find it has flaws.
-

A waterproof cases is something we definitely want to get right the first time. :) The new case for the GPS should be far superior to the old one for the 1080p.
-Keith-
In which aspects exactly? And did I get it right that there are now two cases under construction? A waterproof case (max depth < 10 m, ETA april) and a true underwater housing (max depth > 30 m, ETA ??), or am I wrong?
Off-topic: is it possible to rearrange the forum so that the newest comments appear on top of the screen? o_O Appreciate it. -
-
-
-
-
No - it's one case for the GPS camera. However, it should be more robust to water pressure than the case for the 1080p camera. We therefore expect it to have a better depth rating. Again, at the current time we think it is about 30 days away from us getting product in Seattle to send to our channel.
-Keith -
-
Have a trip on the 5th of APRIL with lots of snorkling, the GPS will be nothing more than a bag waight for this trip. Bummer
-
Hi orduner,
We are sorry for the delay, but we wanted to make sure that this case was going to be able to go deeper and still be economically viable for you all. The wait will be worth it , I'm just sorry that we couldn't get it out there sooner for you.
Cheers,
Dave. -
-
-
-
-
When I am using the waterproof housing will I still be able to active the blue-tooth so I can adjust my camera settings and alignment?
-
Hi Old_Guy,
Sadly this is something that we could not incorporate into the design ,as the logistics of making another possible water ingress point would have driven the costs up significantly. I hope you understand.
Cheers,
Dave. -

@David Whitefield: this is an excellent argument to support a future F/W option to have BT come on at powerup. I could see watersports folks wanting that option and it seems like an easy f/w change:
1) Option to allow BT to powerup with camera
1a) Option to have BT auto-shutdown if no connection in X minutes/seconds
1b) Option to have BT app shut BT off BT power until next powerup
Usage model is presumably to put camera in waterproof case and leave it there. Power camera up on boat or shore, check image/settings with PDA (which *might* even be in its own waterproof case) and then disconnect BT. Seems like the options above would make pretty much everyone happy and require fairly minimal f/w changes.
Respectfully,
Richard -
-
-
-
-
richardsolomon,
Excellent suggestion. Your use case is exactly as I imagine using it. There are times when I will want to also switch modes so the BT application allowing that makes the 1-2 toggle switch a mute point when in the waterproof housing. I would also have my phone is a waterproof case that is submerge-able.-
Cool, so I'm thinking the only "gotcha" would be the need to power cycle the camera to bring BT back up, but that seems doable *IF* the waterproof case allows it....
Even if not, I think the f/w changes are good - some folks may choose to take the battery hit and leave BT on anyway, others may only need start-of-day BT to setup a config.
Richard -
-
-
-
-
I don't think the Power down issue to bring BT back up would be an inconvenience, typically if you are changing something over the BT application you are already in a holding pattern on what you are shooting anyways so a 10-15 second power cycle is no big deal. It appears the HD camera waterproof case has a power button so I would imaging the new one would as well so there should be no need to open the case other than to add a new memory card or battery.
-
Hi Michael and Richard,
One engineering challenge in this is the ability to press the bluetooth button, its position would interfere with the record slider and its function within the case. I know our FW guys are good, but getting all of this functionality out of the relatively narrow band of data that can be fed through a bluetooth connection (of which we are already pushing its abilities) will be beyond its capabilities. Not to mention that there are limits as to what can be done with the FW in the camera, I would love it to make toast for me , but that ain't going to happen sadly.
Keep throwing the ideas up though! Some of them may stick ...... Hhhmm toast.
Dave -
-
I think you missed the crux of the idea - once configured and placed in the case, the user NEVER pushes the BT button. AFAIK, the press-BT-button-to-connect exists because of the battery tradeoff of BT on all the time. We're proposing to take that tradeoff in the worst case, but the tweaks suggested actually get rid of even that....
Think of the firmware change as simply "automatically briefly pushing the BT button" on poweron. The user pairs normally and configures the camera (normally) to enable this special mode (perhaps s/he assigns it to a switch position even). Only when the camera is in the new mode does it do anything differently - at that point our diver puts her camera in the wp case and turns it on. The camera boots with BT enabled, connects to her wp-cased phone. She makes config changes if needed, checks alignment and disconnects - at which point BT powers off. *IF* she needs BT again, she must power cycle the camera...
As I mentioned, I don't know if the WP case allows manipulating the power button or not - I believe it DOES allow manipulating the record switch, and does NOT allow manipulating the BT switch. We don't propose to change any of that - but power button manipulation allows a little more optimization ;)
Richard -
-
-
-
-
David,
Don't dismiss this so soon. The only thing Richard hinted at that would be needed is to enable the blue tooth at power on. This should be easily capable of building into the firmware because it is an initialization state. Turning off the blue tooth connection after some amount of unconnected time is also a power state case and should be capable in a closed loop condition some time after power on, but if this is not capable turning off the BT with the application should be workable but may require more time to develop depending on the root control the BT can initialize. There should be no conflict with bandwidth as the BT is not transmitting video when you are making camera setting changes. Freeze the video, make changes re-enable video feed when settings are made.
I don't want toast from this thing, I just want creature features that make the camera so easy to use a cave man with an android phone could use it!-
Having the Bluetooth come on for a period at power-up would be excellent, but I suspect it might need a hardware change, but as the hidden button controls both the bluetooth and the update function, I suspect that it is just read by the internal CPU. So as suggested turning bluetooth on could be part of the power-up sequence, automatically turning it off after say no connection in 60 seconds.
If this cannot be achieved a possible work around could be to turn the bluetooth on and then place it in the case, but this raises the question how does the waterproof case fit over the camera? Is it just a case of opening the back and sliding it in? -

I think that we know what is likely going to happen to 'the end of April'....the same thing as 'we are expecting sometime in January for the WP case' and the other estimations. No one should be buying this camera with the expectations that accessories will be becoming available for it. I made that mistake and now need to find a way to dump it and pickup another camera that does have a proved wp housing system for it.
With delays of this nature and the company can't provide a means for notifying owners of when it does become available (other than telling them to check this posting frequently) is pretty sad.- view 1 more comment

I agree and appreciate David Whitfield;'s comment. I bought mine for snowmobiling and work. Now the snowmobile season is gone and only use it stopped cause the snow would get into the camera if I used it while moving. I suggested a couple months back to provide a rebate or reduced cost for the case to existing customers. Seems the subject changed when it came to making things right for me by giving me a fiscal break for not being ablr to use as intended. MY friends bought the other guys camera (after learning there is no case for the GPS) for less and it came with the waterproof case. Well off to getting the boat, and kayaks ready.

Still waiting on an official release from Contour. I find it difficult to believe a distributor/vendor would be making the public service announcement for the product unless it was a joint venture.
David,
Can we get an official nod of the head or a hand waiving to quantify this claim -

hey did you gust taken into consideration the fact that there are lens kits for the contour gps
when i had the the non gps unit i couldn't use the waterproof case unless i took off the lens pack and put it back to stock -
-
Hi All,
The orange ones are for the ContourHD (1080 and 720 models) We wanted to make it visually different so that it was easily identified , as well as it falls in to our "Contour Green" of the company image. As for a date, well so long as there is no hold up, May it is , that is obviously down to us getting the stock in to Seattle and then distribution from there out. As some of that is out of our hands, we wont give a date until they are safe in the warehouse. I hope you understand.
Cheers,
Dave.-
I though end of April.

I wanted to know if we are able to purchase directly from you guys or do we have to go into a pre-order battle with vendors to secure a waterproof case? I am leaving for the tropics in the middle of May and I desperately need a waterproof case.
It would be great to know if orders will be accepted for the online store as the HD case is in the accessories. Also would be nice to know if we need to put in for a pre-order to get cases from this first batch.
Thank you! -

1Hi Everyone,
Ok then , the case will be capable of 60 meters in depth, it will only be compatible with the ContourGPS and yes it will only be $39.99 in the USA. The price may vary depending on your location on the planet. We are expecting a shipment next week and then distribution to start from then. I hope that clears it up for you all.

I was advise by Emerald Diving that they would only have 20 pcs Waterproof case, which they are reserving for sales on Camera with case. So that would mean they wouldn't sell waterproof case alone. Please advise where else I can get a waterproof case, as well as Connect View, hopefully before the 15th of May.

Hey you guys.. You can send an e-mail to emeralddiving@gmail.com. I have pre-ordered the "Contour GPS Waterproof Case (60m depth rating)" for only $39,99! That comes with approximately $25 on delivery costs to Europe, but still it's a bargain in my opinion. 60m! That's 200 feet! :D
They will get their first in two weeks. Isn't this great? Problem solved! :D -

So they're sold out then, because my order has been accepted. :)

I'm curious about Michael's question well regarding whether we will be able to purchase it directly from you guys, or if it will be the same situation as the Connect View Card where we have to go to an external source to buy it?

ordered 3 minutes ago, they promised delivery friday I let you know the progress :) -

And for the Canucks, ordered mine from Point of View Cameras last Thurs ($43) and got it Tues.
Very nice, well worth the wait. Looks great with good attention to detail and great price. Can't wait to go on a dive to try it out. -

Would I need the waterproof case just for riding a dirt or street motorcycle when it starts to rain a bit. Or is it really only safe to use in totally dry conditions?

I wouldn't even trust it in light rain or splashes. Based on tear downs of the device I've seen online it is far too easy for water to get to the internal components even with splashes and light rain. The part of the case design that worries me the most is the way the rear door works. There is no seal at all water can easily get in. Once inside the door you device is now easily exposed via the USB port, SD slot, and battery compartment. Also, the top slid is basically a water catcher, and any water that is catches is going to funnel directly down into the case. I never use mine when there are any real risk of water getting on it.

I used to have Casio G'Zone phone that was completely waterproof and it had rubber seals around all the doors/seals etc. Since these camera's lack that protection, you are probably right that I should avoid using it in the rain -- or just get a case.

Well I am looking forward to this being available in the UK, however, this might be a stupid question, but what mounts fit the waterproof case?
As I need to mount it on my kite buggy when I am on the beach as there can be a lot of salt water about?-
Hi Old_Guy,
The water proof case should be available in the UK soon, you would have to contact your supplier to check for a firm ETA. The case will fit to any of the mounts using the T-rails , so it wouldn't fit the windshield mount, thats the only one. The case will have a 1/4 thread in the bottom so the universal mount wouldn't be applicable. I hope that helps.
Cheers,
Dave. -

Cheers Dave,
Typically I use one of three mounts when I am in the buggy, those being the Helmet mount, Goggle strap mount, or the 1/4" thread, but the latter the most so I look good to go one I can get my hands on one, I see else were in this thread that they are already in Europe so I might buy it there.
Many thanks -

just received my waterproof case. like promised :)
Tomorrow MTB in The Netherlands and Sunday I will go kitesurfing, when there is enough wind with my new waterproof case. -

Just recieved my case, however, the record slide switch doesn't do anything. There is a green record slide switch on the outside of the case, but inside the case is just smooth glass - meaning, you slide the switch back and forth but it doesn't do anything and would be impossible for it to do anything. did i get a reject? this can't be the intended design. What's the deal????

put the camera on (with beeps enabled), insert the camera when you slide the switch, it won't slide the switch on top of your camera, but you will hear a beep, and it is recording.

ok, i am an idiot. Didn't try it before, but just tried it and it apparently works with the magnet. Worked like a charm - disregard my original posts!
Dont see how you can adjust the lens though...... -

Will the new "green" waterproof case be compatible with the new Contour+?
-
Hi scorpionryder,
The Contour+ will fit in the case, however it is fractionally longer and therefore we cannot warrant the use of the two together when used under water just in case of a seal failure. Another challenge is the wider field of view the Contour+ has, as the ContourGPS waterproof case will be in that field of view and thus in shot if used together. I hope hat helps.
Cheers,
Dave. -

Does anyone know of were I can get one of these in the UK, I have been in contact with my normal suppliers one even took an order and said it would be shipped last week to me. Guess what further investigation shows they don't have them.
Really would like to get my hands on one of these for this Saturday.

Hi Old_Guy,
Yes, this is a recent change and needs to be addressed on our site.

Is that a black case? I thought the GPS case was only available in that neon yellow color? I'd love to have a black case since I only plan on using it to protect it from heavy rain and added protection against drops and flying debris.

Hi, What colour will the Contour+ case be? Need to be able to tell if retailer knows the diffrence as there are many sites selling the Green GPS case as compatable or rather suitable for the Plus.

Dave,
Just got the Contour+ new case. The instructions are Very limited. Could you please tell me:
1) What is the rated max depth of the case?
2) What is the small piece of double sided sticky tape that was placed on bottom
front inside of case for. There is a spare piece too? Seems to do nothing?-
Hi Steve,
The case is rated to 60 meters in depth and those little pads are silica pad that are there to remove atmospheric moisture to avoid condensation when the temperature between inside and outside of the case would cause this to happen. I hope that helps.
Cheers,
Dave. -

Ian Thomson
I have just received my waterproof housing with the orange trims.
How the devil do you open the case?
I must be dumb or too weak but dont want to force the orange latch with a screwdriver.-
Hi Ian Thomson,
If you have received the orange case for a ContourGPS then you have received the wrong one, the ContourGPS case is a lime green colour. If it is for a ContourHD then you will have the correct case. To open it , you will need to grab the rear of the catch and pull down, it will be a tad tight but it will open. Let me know how you get on.
Cheers,
Dave. -

these cameras are so cool, i got a gps for my bikes but wanted one for the jetski, it was easier to buy a hd and case as well, now i got 2 cameras for dual mounting on land, the best thing about it is that the hd floats if it were to come off the ski form going under, btw i love making my own mounts, we even took both out in the cirrus plane the other day over to france, if your willing to persevere with a camera then this is the one to have guys.

It would be nice if Contour could provide a release date so you could make plans that involve the use of your Contour GPS or make other arrangements. (not gonna happen)
It might also be nice to be notified when it's ready so you don't have to check every single day. (also not gonna happen)
The case is estimated to be released at the end of April, this is an approximate date though.
Dave.
The cases are being dispatched to the retailers now , so you should start to see them on the shelves in the next week or so. I hope that helps.
Cheers,
Dave
