4Hi filter97,
here are the instructions on how to format in the ContourGPS :-
1. Power off the camera.
2. Remove the microSD card from the camera.
2. Power up the camera with the microSD card removed. The camera will TRIPLE beep and the SD card LED on the lower rear of the camera will flash red and the front record LED will flash red/yellow, indicating the SD card is missing.
3. Leave the camera power up and insert the microSD card.
4. Using a pin or small nail, push and hold down the pinhole "formatting" button located above the SD card slot. The camera will beep once when the format is complete.
5. Release the pinhole button only after the camera beeps.
6. Power off the camera by holding down the power button for 3-5 seconds.
7. Power up the camera. The camera should boot normally and be ready to shoot video.
Please note that all data on the SD card will be lost during the format process.
I hope that helps you out.
Cheers,
Dave.

how long should a 16gb card be held down for?

Hi mykayakcoach,
It should take around 3 minutes at the maximum for a 16G card. If you have been waiting longer then try this program to format the card http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/forma... and then try it in the camera, it should work. Let me know what you find.

Dave,
First off my camera triple beeps twice when I turn it on without the SD card then I pressed the button up to 25 min on my 16GB card and nothing. I cannot get it to format. What is wrong? This camera also sometimes keeps the two red dots up and won't shut off so I typically pull the battery and start over. Help please.- view 3 more comments

FW version V1.15
I walked through the format process and I still doesn't recognize the card when I power up. I can plug in the camera and the computer lists it as a card and named Contour GPS but still blinks yellow/red on the rear LED.
I assume the camera is the problem? -

Hi Litto,
Out of curiosity, have you recorded on the card at all, as if you have and you remove the footage on your Mac, when you eject the camera if you haven't emptied the trash then the footage remains on the card. You have to empty the trash before ejecting the camera. Give that a try and let me know if that works.

I also followed this procedure but my camera didn't beep and the lights continued to flash after holding the button for over 5minutes. However mine seems to be working fine now and my computer recognises the camera as a drive etc (it didn't when i first connected it)
Hope you get sorted

so when I power on without the sd, I get one long beep and then it will not respond to the power button anymore. I had to remove the battery to make the sound stop. What do I do?

Hi Glad,
Does the camera respond normally when the card is inserted in the camera when powering on? If so , what firmware is the camera running? Let me know.

I bought a used contour about a year ago. Thought I would upgrade the firmware but my camera has no reset button on the back to put a pin in. Is it possible I have an older camera? it says ContourHD on the side and is model 1200.

I have windows xp. I connected it to my computer and browsed to it but I do not see a bin file to delete. is this right?

Hi Stella92,
Did the firmware take on the camera when you tried it? You can check in Storyteller in the camera configure utility, it will show what version is installed on the camera in there. If it has the correct firmware then you should be good to go, but I would expect that the bin file should still be on the card though. Let me know what you find.

Worked great on my GPS camera. I formatted a bunch of 2GB cards I had laying around work (from new Blackberry phones). So far the camera likes the ones I have tested.
I have an 8GB card that will format with success, but the camera will only record for about 9 to 10 minutes (it is not full, it just stops recording), and I can do this several times until it gets full. The card used to record for an hour and a half when I first got it. I am testing out the card, and I am pretty sure it has become bad. -

Hey David, is it ok to use the sdcard.org program to format the card while it is still in the camera (HD720)? Also how often do you format? I was (and always have) had the 'no audio' issue, formatted with the sdcard.org program and recorded 12 clips and all had audio. Next day I recorded three clips and two had no audio. Hadn't formatted yet just deleted the 12, recorded one (that had audio), deleted and recorded two (with no audio). This is with an 8GB card that has no name on it. I tested the card with the other program and it showed 4.2Mbs so it should be a good card, but I will be getting a SanDisk to try and eliminate the card variable.
Next step I'm gonna try is formatting everytime instead of just deleting recorded files.
Thanks for all your help, bruddah.-
Hi hufstuff,
You are fine to format a card whilst it is in the camera, as for formatting , you should only need to do this once a month really (personal preference). If you are finding it is resolving an issue , then do it as often as you feel necessary it wont damage the card. I hope that helps you out.
Cheers,
Dave. -

None of these methods work with the new Contour Plus, Model 1500 camera ... they do work w. the older cameras (I have two), but not the Contour Plus ... if you remove the SD card, turn on the camera (it doesn't beep 3 times) and open the back, the camera goes off??? This should be at the top of the list of FAQ's ... and I can't find it anywhere ... .Grrrrr....
-
Hi Richard Sugden,
Can you tell me the sequence that you follow for formatting the card in the Contour+ , as the camera should beep 3 times when there is no card installed and then powered on.
Cheers,
Dave. -

Works for me on the Contour+ 1500. Takes about 3 seconds to format the 2Gb that came with the camera, and about 6 seconds for a Lexar 32Gb Class 10 card. Name of camera is "CONTOUR+" when connected.
OS: Windows XP SP3
Contour+ F/W: 1.33.8
Now if only Bluetooth wasn't so flaky ;) -

PS - there should be an option in StoryTeller to format the SD card, that would work w. any camera ....

rename the sd card if u got it called contour+ to just contour, helped due to the pluss giving it an ivalid comand line aparently

One thing that *might* cause a card not to format is if the record slider of the camera is in the "record" position. The record slider must be in the "off" position for formatting to work. Just something to keep in mind.

Hi. When I try out the instructions above the front light flashes yellow/red as they should, The rear light, however, is yellow and NOT red. When pushing down the pinhole button for at least 5 minutes nothing happens, except that the camera refuses to take any command until the battery is removed and reasserted. Very frustrating. Can you help?

Hi tormegg,
Try formatting the card wit this program on your computer https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/form... . this should sort this out for you as you are having this challenge. Let me know how you get on.

Just a heads up, this worked for me with a SanDisk 16GB Micro HC card. Would be nice to be able to format straight through the camera though. Frustrating to have to "fish" for solutions to foreseeable memory upgrades.

Try recharging the battery .... I had similar problems w. a low battery charge ... AOK after recharging...

Just got a new Contour+ and am struggling with formatting as well. Following the instructions, I can't get a Sandisk 16GB Micro HC1 card to format. By the way, the instructions in the manual that came with the camera are different than what's on the web site -- neither works. I did take some footage on the 2GB card that came with the camera and followed the format process which did work as described and erased the two files that were on the card. Repeated the process with the 16GB card and still no luck. Formatted the 16GB card on the PC -- no problem. Tried to copy the two folders from the 2GB contour formatted card and rename the volume -- didn't work. By the way you can't rename a volume with a + sign in it on a PC so that may be the barrier with that approach. Stumped -- need some help.

Hi ugene,
With eth 16G card, try formatting it with this program first https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/form... and then see if it works. If it still fails to work , run the card through this program http://mympx.org/Downloads/p13_sectio... and see if the card is performing as it should. Let me know the results.

What if you format the memory card and the red light on the rear of the camera continues to blink - indicating memory full?

I actually solved the issue - it was more a "newbie mac book user" item - i needed to empty the deleted items, which freed up the memory space. The card is the 2 gig card that came w/ the unit.

Just purchased a countour + and installed story teller on my pc... after registering the camera I was able to configure some of the camera settings (increased audio, set to 1080 from 720), but now after filming a short video with it and uploading to pc I removed the 2 gig mem card that came with it to install a larger 16 gig card. The 16 gig card will not format with the camera and now the 2gig card won't format. PC won't recognize camera either. Camera beeps three times when turning it on w/ mem card installed, light flashes orange continuously as well... confused and frustrated, please help

My problem, which was similar, turned out simply to be that the battery was not well charged... Try recharging the batter and then try formatting again ...
Good luck! -

I have a new SanDisk Mobile Ultra HC1 16gb sd card and after 10 minutes it still will not format the card. The record slider is set to off and every time i try and format it I plug the camera in first and make sure that the battery is full. I have also tried to format the card by leaving it in and then turning on the camera like it says to do here http://help.contour.com/customer/port.... I have formatted the card using the program above and have also tested it with the other and the card and it works fine. Is there something im not doing or does this card not work with the camera.

the same happens to my camera. It takes like hours of green led blinking and I don ́t have the patience to wait more than 15 minutes to get that signal. I ́ve pretty much done all there is in the "fix it yourself book of recipies"...! I ́ve formatted the memory chip, erased the bt.adr file and updated the software through the website.
It does connect to the GPS signal in rural areas, but I don ́t get as lucky when I try it on the beach.
Regards,
Rodrigo
