My video editing software does not accept the .MOV format captured by my ContourHD. What can I do?

I have a hard time seeing how anything here answered the persons question.
If the Contour is only for people with vast video editing and encoding knowledge then it should be marketed as such. Even though I have edited numerous hours of videos including slow motion, misic and the other usual effects from my old camera, I now have 30 hours of video from a Moab/Fruita/loma/grand junction mtb trip that will remain useless until this question is answered in a manner that results in editing capabilities.
This question is asked all over every sport forum on the web. If there is no easy answer, then that's that, but any chance you Doods could try again to be the source for solving one of the biggest comlaints about all small cams? -
you can also just try changing/renaming the EXTENSION of the file name to mp4.
example - vid.mov rename to vid.mp4
then some editors will read the file

Although most current versions of video editing software programs do accept clips recorded in .MOV video format, some do not. If yours does not, you might want to use a video format file converter to convert the .MOV format to another format your editing software can accept. Although we do not endorse any particular video conversion utilities, please check our forum for conversion utilities recommended by other Contour customers.

Probably better of changing the MOV container to MP4 or MKV. This avoids converting \ re-encoding the file. Doing so takes bugger all time and and no quality is lost in the process.
Search for mov to mp4 no re encode (in Google) -

Hi frogger0528.
Try installing the k-lite codec pack (full version) from here http://www.free-codecs.com/k_lite_cod... and that may well assist . Let me know how it goes.

Ken, from what I read in other forums, several other POV cameras have or had this same issue. Reportedly, there was a firmware upgrade to one of the Kodak cams that let Vegas recognize the audio track in the .mov. I love the Contour for skydiving, but it has to play nice with the editing software.

I use final cut pro - apple mac-- mpeg streamclip- for any conversions you get stuck with -if your using a mac contact me for free advice- if your using a pc...unlucky

I use 720p x 60fps to record my videos as they are moving sport shots...and I use Windows Live Movie Maker for editing with OS of Window Home Premium. Never had a problem with what I shoot. They are on YouTube - Baddad53. Movie Maker is timeline based and easy to use. Also I stop and start the camera every five minutes or so.,.. so I have long video segments to work with.

Hi Guys,
OK lets cut to the chase. The h264/AAC mov container we use was chosen as it provides the BEST compression for HD footage capture. It wasn't chosen for the Mac community it was chosen for its abilities to compress all of the data in the most efficient manner.
As for different software not being able to deal with it that is usually down to a couple of things. First the age of the software and what devices it was aimed at, don't forget that although HD has been around for a while, its still only recently become 'consumer' available. Secondly some software manufacturers havent cottoned on to the h264 codec as being the way forward. It seems that only the companies that have a true forward thinking have accepted the h264 codec, that will be why when Microsoft made WLMM they made it accept Mov files ,considering that they are the main competitors of Mac that must show how they are forward thinking!
We also must look at what codecs are installed on your computer. We do recomend that if your PC is struggling to play the footage , to download the k-lite codec pack (either the full or mega versions) http://www.free-codecs.com/k_lite_cod... this will usually get things running for most computers.
If you are still in the "mov is a mac thing" camp all you need to do is open the files in explorer and rename them from mov to mp4 ( for example 001.mov to 001.mp4 ) this will play fine, some programs see the 'mov' and say stubbornly " nope don't like it" tell it it's a mp4 and it welcomes it with open arms!
I'm sure some of you will correct any failures in my explanation, please do so ! I don't pretend to be an expert in these things i just pass on my findings how i find them , as if they work then someone will find it helpful.
Cheers,

1.Both MOV and MP4 are lossy formats which sacrifices quality for file size
2.MOV was initially developed by Apple as a file format for QuickTime
3.MOV is the basis for the development of MP4
4.MP4 is the industry standard and has more widespread support than MOV
5.Saving your file to either MOV or MP4 would result in the same video if you use the same codec
Basically:
MOV and MP4 are just containers and they do not present any real effect on the quality of the encoded videos. That is up to the codec like H.264 and the others. Choosing between MOV and MP4 should be based solely on where you want to play the resulting videos. If it is only meant to circulate around the Mac community, then you are pretty safe with MOV but if you want to put it in your PSP or any other non Apple portable device, then you are better off with MP4
I know this doesn't help, but sums up the containers, yes sometimes just changing th e extension from .mov to .mp4 will work on Mac's and can give problems on other OS's
What really annoys me, is I can play and edit mov's no problems, But the easy edit software insists you have quicktime installed, really! I don;t want to install quicktime, can edit files without it, and play them without it, but easyedit won;t install unless Quciktime is... Cmon!
Unless the person states what Video editing program they are using, other than making suggestions then what else are we to do?-
Thanks for clearing that up !
I will say that im on an XP based machine and the old "Mov to Mp4" trick works fine on my machine and all of the other windows based machines i have used in the past.
Yes that was a failing of Easy Edit! The program has been a pain in the butt for both us and you guys over the years, that's why we have started again with the new "Storyteller" program that's soon to be released. I agree Quicktime is pants! i hate it but live with it for the meantime.....
We are not a software company but we like to provide a basic program to give folk an idea of what you can do with the footage. This leaves the customer to find a program that works for their intended purpose, someone who wants to share a small video doesn't need a big all singing program that costs, which is why we like our customers to choose from whats out there, we will though help folk by telling them what programs have worked for others to assist them on their quest as that's always free.
If you want to upload to the site without Easy Edit and its Quicktime hangups , you can use the upload function on the site (that is an improvement on the EasyEdit one!) as an added bonus we've upped the file limit to 2G now with that uploader!
On a personal note i don't use Easy Edit anymore, i just use the folder as a library for the files.

Caveman- I'm glad Sony Vegas works for you, however a quick search shows that others are not having as much luck. In fact, a search of ANY editing program has people who cannot edit .mov files after paying for them, so my confidence with them working for me is not high enough to warrant the costs. This is why I am searching for answers in forums such as this.
I am still searching.
Windows "live" Movie Maker is just as bad as the easy edit- in typical Microsoft fashion, they spent thousands of hours addressing the complaints 1/10 of 1% of users had with MM2.6, and hosed the other 99.9% who thought is was great. Music on the timeline isn't even in a graph so you can spead the timeline to get cuts in time with the music and try to find a simple fade from/to black. It isn't there anymore.
The >mov to .Mp4 and all other "tricks" I have found on Google have not worked for getting the files into the MM2.6.
As mentioned, searching for a program that seems foolproof has been fruitless, and questions to the community at large results in people telling me what works for them, and acting indignant that it doesn't work for everyone.
The thoughtful responses here has given me new things to try. if I find anything that works, I will be sure post it up.
Just thinking out loud, but with the thousands of posts on every video forum on this subject, it would seem that If Contour is designing an editor and you want it to immediately be a hit- Copy MM 2.6 and get it to play your HD files. Instant sand dramatic sales increase due to the ability to use the footage!-
Hi vibrato,
Im on the same line as Cavman, Sony Vegas Movie 10HD accepts mov files no problem, the earlier versions didn't. I had Vegas 9 and had to do a bit of shenanigans for it to use movs. but Vegas 10 accepts them without issue. AVS also accepts movs, I have this as my second editing tool for short edits that don't need too much to be done with them.
You have to remember that the nature of forums is that they are a negative place, as its where people generally air their grievances and its very rare that they have satisfied people on them. Take this thread, it has a mixture but its generally a thread for folk to moan about their experiences with mov files and the fact not all programs can deal with them that well. We don't mind this as it also attracts people that are willing to help others out with their issues they are having and assist them in getting the best out of their footage. If you have any questions let me know and i will do my best to assist you.
Cheers,
Dave. -

Some Followup- There's good information here, the 1st response did, in fact, answer the question. I'm sure part of my problem is Vista, which is a level of frustration all it's own. (I promised my wife I wouldn't change anything until she finishes this semester of school... waiting...)
I asked this question on several video sites and MTBR and got a lot of good suggestions there also.
Taking a suggestion from MTBR, I downloaded a free program called MPEG streamclip. Within about 2 minutes, I had the settings in and was reformatting my 1st clip, keeping the 480 @ 60 FPS. My initial attempts at MM 2.6 seem to be working trouble free, (This same clip in Movie Maker LIVE chatters and stutters and won't play- this is the same clip on the same computer!) Reformatting a 48 minute clip took 2 hours, but I set it up before I went for a ride and it was finished when I got back. Cool. Only 29 hours of video to go! (yes, that's a LOT of editing. That's what I get for buying extra batteries and a couple 16G cards. SHEESH!)
I am aware that MM 2.6 doesn't keep the 60fps. For smooth slow mo I can slow it down in another format and then import it, which is a pain, but doable until I get a "real" program, like Sony Vegas 10. (Sorry caveman- the reviews I was reading were for earlier versions, looks like you and Dave are leading me- kicking and screaming all the way- right where I need to be!) With the multitude of configurations out there, having one that is a little rarer (along with my ignorance of the subject) caused me to have to search a lot deeper than most to find a solution. Hopefully this is as it seems and I'm on my way to video goodness.
To sum up for anyone reading this, the converters mentioned in the 1st response is THE answer. If you have not been able to get the Googled solutions for getting .mov onto your editing software, and are frustrated trying to figure out which programs would work for your configuration and which ones won't, Sincerely- give mpeg streamclip a try- it is the only thing so far that worked for me, and I've tried every trick I could find to get them into mm 2.6. There's a good chance it will work for your program, too.,
Everyone, Thanks for all your help!
-Vibrato-
Hey Vibrato,
I tried installing several codecs to get Vegas 9 to understand the audio. I installed Morgan MJPEG, Quicktime, FFDSHOW, Easy Edit, and finally the K-Lite codec pack. Nothing worked. When I installed Vegas 10, it worked.
I'm glad you went out and found a converter that works. That wasn't ideal for me, since I have paying customers waiting for an edited DVD right after their skydive. -

You guys have much time on your hands...
My movie maker accepts the files from my camera.
Easy Edit is difficultly useless... unless for the final upload. I use movie maker, convert that file to whatever else Easy Edit will upload and then do it.
Yeah, I don't care much if it loses quality... I think it does actually. I wish it was just plain easier.- view 3 more comments

What's the difference between the Storyteller program that comes with the ContourGPS and the Storyteller program you are talking about that you "will get it out as soon as its possible."??? -
-
Hi Cav,
The Storyteller that comes with the GPS works for the GPS only at this stage. There have been a few bugs that have made the program unresponsive at times to other cameras, this is the only difference at the moment as these are being ironed out, hence the "will get it out as soon as its possible." quote. I hope that helps out.

I am running an HP pc with 8GB RAM, 2.2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. I have Magix Movie Edit Pro 16 HD for my editing SW that I purchased in July 2010, and is up to date with their latest updates. It recognizes .MOV files however I can not import video captured on my ContourGPS and I can not do anything creative with the SW provided with the camera. Movie Edit Pro only displays the first frame of the video, and plays that as a still image, no moving video.
Hopefully this silences the idea that we all have outdated SW and that the camera can not be part of the issue.-
Hi Rick S.
It may be worth checking out with Magix support as to why this is happening. I can only comment on what program I'm running (Vegas 10 Platinum) This does accept the files and I'm running a lower spec machine. So we have to assume that its either a codec issue or an issue with the software you are running. We always ask about the codecs as we have found that over the years that a lack of them will stop some programs from running the files effectively. We recommend installing the k-lite codec pack (either the full or mega versions) which you can find here http://www.free-codecs.com/k_lite_cod... . I hope that this helps you out a bit.

For just throwing something together I just use iMovie on mac. I'm not really sure what it changes as far as fps but for simple edits it's a good simple solution. I run Final Cut Pro as well but yet to play with contour files in that. Obviously not much help to those on windows, but if you have a Mac it's way simple.

I spend the better part of a day messing around with how to eidt MOV files on my PC and not having to convert them to another format. If you want to do very simple editing, trimming clips and deleting portions of your movies with the Contour GPS, then the free Streamclip product is a very good way to go. I was able to take a MOV format video clip and perform simple delete and trim edits. After the editing, I was able to display the file in Storyteller and the GPS data was retained without any problems.

You can try to use Boilsoft MOV Converter, I think this may help you .

Another thing to think about is that this is all new technology.
If your computer system is more than 2 years old, it's not anything to do with Contour, nor is it their problem! You probably have to upgrade your system. Simple fact of life. A 6-core, 8Gig of RAM system can easily be had for ~$800 so it's not like you need to spend thousands anymore.
For editing the movies in Windows, Windows Movie Maker is a VERY basic piece of movie editing software not designed for this. It's designed to be grandma friendly.... Not state of the art.
Same for Contour's Storyteller - just a basic get the job done editor.
Count on spending the $50-$100 on basic but *real* editing software like Adobe's Premiere Element's 9 (Currently on sale for $49 !!!) or Sony Vegas.
That opens a world of opportunities for post-processing, including 3rd party filters & etc! Super powerful, bit of a learning curve but then you want professional results no?
I personally would rather have Contour working on their firmware for the options everyone wants (which no one else can do) than waste their time duplicating software that's already out there...
And for GOODNESS SAKES DO NOT think your 2+ year old software was designed to work with this new technology! 720p home footage barely existed!-
Replying to the original question,
VLC Media Player converts the MOV file to a playable format.
Video Pad Video Editor does a good job for those of us that are not educated in all things computers or video. -

As a followup- here's a link to Youtube for the "short version" of the video I needed to convert from.MOV's for.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdUBRc...
As I posted earlier, this is shot on a countour in 480 @ 60fps, AND an old crappy sony camcorder. I used the MPEG STREAMCLIP to convert the .mov's to .AVI's and it works just fine in the movie maker 2.6.
Eventually I plan to follow Caveman's advice and upgrade to a real editing system, but I don't think this vid is bad considering I used freeware to make it, obvious lack of riders skill and copyright infringement not withstanding. (Not MM Live, which does not have the capability to make this video.)
With this converter and a littleplastic piece superglued on to the batteries to hold them tight, I am back in love with my Contour!
Thanks again for all of the advice, everyone!

Video Editing software, NCH/Video Pad Video Editor v 2.2
David Whitefield turned me on to this software last year. There is a free version and the purchase upgrade is on sale right now at half price, for 39.00 dollars. The software plays files right out of the camera, it's easy to use, supports tons of file formats for input, outputs to dvd, cd , blu-ray, hd-dvd. Lots of great effects, out put in slo motion, fast forward even backward. Great editing software. -

I have previously used AnyVideoConverter free to convert MOV and other formats for PC. I was skeptical at first, but found it works great and is quick. There is also a mac version. Find it here:

Hey! You all should know that on a Mac with iMovie 09 I couldn't import directly, but iMovie '11 you CAN import directly. AND (this is key) it's now available stand alone from the Apple "App Store" and it's only $14.99.

I have Vista x64 with Movie Maker 6. I could not play movies from either my Contour GPS or my Nikon, both of which encode as AVC/AAC in .MOV (Quicktime) container. I'm determined not to have to convert the files, as it's a pain and it chews up disk space. I managed to get the Nikon files to work without converting or renaming by installing the Vista Codec Pack (plus the 64-bit extension). But the Contour files still do not work. I think the reason is the text streams that are embedded in the file. I think Movie Maker cannot find codecs for those streams. Has anyone found a solution for MM6 without conversion?

I was finally able to edit my HD videos from my Contour GPS in Movie Maker 6.0 on Vista x64, without having to convert them. Here are the steps:
1. Download and install the Vista Codecs pack 5.91 from Shark007:
http://shark007.net/vistacodecpackage...
2. Download and install the x64 Components addon:
http://shark007.net/x64components.html
(If you are running Vista x32 you won't need these).
3. Start Menu --> All Programs --> Shark007 Codecs --> Settings Application x64
On the MOV~OGG tab: Set Mov to use Haali’s Splitter
4. In Windows Movie Maker 6.0
Tools --> Options -> Compatibility
Verify that the following filters are enabled:
ffdshow audio decoder
ffdshow video decoder
Haali Media Splitter
This worked for me. I can now drag the .mov files right into Movie Maker and edit them. Yay. (My videos so far are 720p 30fps).
I tried the codec packs from K-lite and CCCP, but the ones from Shark007 seemed to hit the mark. All of them are based on ffdshow, which is an open-source codec set that handles HD etc. There are lots of options that can be tweaked and such, but it seems that the key is to use the Haali splitter for the quicktime .mov files.
Keep in mind that the codecs used by 64-bit apps (like WMM) is totally disjoint from those used by 32-bit apps (like media player and storyteller).- view 1 more comment

Adavis, thank you very, very much for posting the step by step instructions. I'm not sure how you figured that out, and I can't believe that it worked for me, but it did. The only difference is that I'm on W7, so I downloaded the W7 version and added the 64 bit update after the fact, as you mention. Step 3 to set Haali's Splitter worked fine. Interestingly, when I got to step 4, I did not see any of the filters you mentioned, but I was still able to import the .mov into WMM6 with no problems.
Thanks again!

I use Sony Vega Studio Platinum 10 with no problems.
Easy editing software for a novice like me and light for my slow pc.
This is the result after 2-3 hours playing with
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAubCG...
Also, image stabilize is a big advanced of the program.
One question from me.

Do you use this 60fps and where?- view 1 more comment

Hi David,
I have to say that I am happy that you convinced me to use Sony Vega.
ok about project properties. Thanks!
But, about end render where is the export for 60fps, and is worth the try to use this?
Is it better the video quality?
I shot in 60fps because I want to use slow motion scenes, one day when I find how can I do this!
To come back to .mov files.
- How can I play .mov files on my TV without to make any video editing?
- The only export files from SonyVega that are playing on my TV are the .wma.
And not the .avi or .mpg. Any idea why?
Thanks again
Dimitris -
-
Hi dolomites,
To render in 60fps you will need to enter the "advanced render" settings and adjust the setting to allow it to render in 60fps. I found the best results when rendering in mp4 format in 60fps. I would be able to run through the exact process but I am away from my PC for a few days, I will make a note for when I return to it to give you better directions.
To get your TV to play the files you might have to rename the extension of the file from mov to mp4. The mp4 file name tricks the TV into allowing it to play, as the mp4 file is recognised by most TVs it should play fine , just double check the specifications of your TV and if it has the ability to play mp4 files. If you are using a DVD player to view them , then it will have to be rendered as a DVD otherwise it wont play.

Hi sarichter,
When you save the file make sure that its saved as a Mov file and is at 8Mbps , this will get the best quality video out of it. I have no experience with Premier so I cannot give any precise details on how to check these settings on that program. If you are running XP then you could have a look at NCH videopad as that works quite well. I hope it helps a little.

Vegas Movie Studio 10HD will accept a single mov file from the camera. But if you try to work with 2 mov files from the camera (to do a cross fade for instance), my experience is that Vegas will crash terribly
The ContourHD video stream format and compression have been optimized for a small camera with limited battery life. Unfortunately, these optimizations severly complicate the amount of calculations any NLE software must perform
So, for every movie file in the camera, I use the following procedure.
1. Load a movie file into vegas
2. Convert to avi format using lagarith lossless codec (u better have a big HD)-- but this preserves fidelity.
3. Repeat above until all files have been converted
4. When all files have been converted, bring any or all of them into Vegas and go to town.
No matter what edits I have used (fades, effects, envelops, track motion, zoom, rotation, etc) I have never gotten Vegas to crash.
5. You can render your final work back to H264 mov mp4 etc or any other codec you like.
You can google or wiki lagarith. Install it, and select it when you render.-
Hi WS,
I was having this issue with Vegas as of recent, until I updated to Vegas Movie Studio 11HD, this totally resolved the issue I was having. At the moment Sony are having a price reduction for this update. Just thought I would let you know.

I'd like to offer up a possibility for anyone having problems editing. I have been using Arcsoft Media Impression. It comes with the Kodak Zi8 HD camera. It's very basic and very easy. It handles the files with no problems. All you need to do is find someone with one of those cameras, and hook it up to your computer and download it! Oh yeah, I'm using a PC, Vista, 64 bit.

I use Mp4cam2AVI to convert to avi. the files look great. it is free and open source. get it from source forge. if video is turned 90 degrees then use virtualdub again opensource and free, loade video then use menu / video / then filters then add, then pick rotate form list then save , there are a few save options i think i use save as old format avi. good luck.
ps avi is a large file.
Hold everything I found a great video editing program it is Video Pad Video Editor by NHC Software, it is free and easy to use and does everything i need like rotate, join , split and save as many different file types and resolutions. -
