ContourHD1080p records to an internal microSD memory card, which means there are no wires and no separate recorders. We include a 2GB card in the box when you purchase the camera, but ContourHD 1080p is compatible with up to a 16GB microSD memory card. Although many microSD cards are compatible with the ContourHD, we cannot guarantee that all microSD cards are compatible with the CountourHD. However, we have tested the following makes, classes, and capacities of micro SD cards with the ContourHD 1080p. Tests were conducted in both 1080p and 960p modes for short (less than one minute) and long (+45 minute) video recordings.
SD Card Class Capacity
Generic MicroSD Class 4 8Gb
SanDisk MicroSD Class 2 8Gb
Centon MicroSD HC Class 2 16Gb
Transcend MicroSD Class 6 6Gb
Kingston MicroSD HC Class 4 8Gb
SanDisk MicroSD HC Class 2 16Gb
MaxFlash MicroSD Class 2 1Gb
MaxFlash MicroSD Class 2 2Gb
MaxFlash MicroSD Class 4 4Gb

Hi David,
I notice that the specs for the Contour HD 1080p says that it takes a 32GB card, but you say that it only takes a 16GB - is the 32GB an upcoming firmware upgrade or something?
Do you get better video quality from higher rated cards (class 4 or 6) or Extreme etc, or is the plain SD card just as good as the higher rated cards?
Cheers
Ed-
Hi Ed,
Yes this is in the process of being done at the moment. When the 1080p was originally launched the 32G cards were not widely available, hence thats why we only recommended the 16G cards. However like all electronic things evolve the 32G cards are now widely available so we thought it only fair to make sure they are compatible with the 1080p cameras out there.
When it comes to card class and image quality, so long as the card is above class2 then it will be fine for most applications. Generally the faster the class the quicker the data can be downloaded off the card, my personal favourite cards of choice are Sandisk Mobile ultra class 6 8G cards, i have found the size ideal for my purpose and the quality is flawless. I haven't had any recording issues or downloading issues with them and they are about a year old now.
I hope this helps out.
Cheers,

Hi David,
In the list above you have included a number of Class 2 cards yet you suggest in your subsequent note that "so long as the card is above class2 then it will be fine for most applications". Does this mean that I should purchase Class 4 or higher? What does "fine for most applications" mean? I will look out for some Sandisk Mobile Ultra cards but am keen to better understand what limitations I might suffer if I purchase cheaper cards.
Thanks
Tim-
Would like to see a specific answer to this question regarding class of card. And exactly what is "most applications"?

David Whitefield,
Can you post what cards that have FAILED your tests?
My Kingston MicroSD HC Class 2 16Gb has really bad ambient noise and your tech support told me this is the problem.-
Hi Reekoe,
Hhhmmm..... give me a bit and i will search the past with my magical forum crystal ball....... FYI i only have used Sandisk mobile ultra class6 8G and 4G cards and they have been perfect for my filming needs.

I have a sandisk class 2 8gb card (has micro sd HC ) written on it, and in 1080p the playback is jerky, only plays back smooth if i set the resolution to 720? is that the card or the pc I am viewing on as i got that card as its one of the ones on the list?
-
having read the post about jerky playback its probably my machine rather than the card, but if my machine is not powerful enough to play at 1080p would it still be ok if i were to burn the clip to a dvd?

Hi dave_sw1,
You should be ok if you burn it to a dvd, as its only your PC that will struggle on playback. Out of curiosity what are the specs of your machine? Also i assume you are playing the file when its transferred to your hard drive and not off of the card? As a class2 card will not be able to have the footage playback any sense off of it, where as your hard drive will once the data is on it. Hope thats f some assistance.

thanks for the quick reply, specs are as follows,
(but I have just ordered another 2GB of ram incase that will help)
Intel Pentium dual-core mobile processor T3200/(1 MB
L2 cache, 2 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 35 W), supporting Intel 64
architecture.
System Bus Speed
667 MHz.
RAM 2 GB of DDR2 667 MHz
I was playing it through the easy edit software after it has been imported, would it be any better through another player?-
Well your heading in the right direction, a bit more RAM never hurts! In the meantime try playing on Quicktime or VLC these handle the footage ok, EasyEdits player was based around quicktime so that would be my first choice. Let me know how you get on. If you have any more issues let me know and i will see what i can suggest.

Hi David
As I would think here:
Isn't i better to tell what the camera needs of writing speed to be able to write data fast enough to the card ? Any card supporting this speed should then be OK. And if it do not work, It would be the vendor of the cards issue to explain why it do not work....
As to reading speed to be able to play jerkyfree video, same thing here: What is the needed reading speed to play god video in FullHD ?
Regards
Ketil, Norway-
Hi Ketil,
For most general purpose footage a class2 card will be fine for writing speed, when you start to need more data (bitrate to max) then a class4 would be best. The main difference is when it comes to reading the data off of the card and on to a computer, a class2 card will transfer the data slower than a class6 card, this is the reason i go for a class6 card (I'm a bit impatient!) . This becomes more relevant the bigger the cards capacity, a class2 card that's transferring 16G of data can be a very long process Indeed !
The best way to view the footage is to download it all onto your PC and play from there as playing off of the card is not the best way as it will hang up on the data transferring. If you want to view off the card then a class6 works fine (personal experience) . I hope that helps out?
Cheers,

Hi AAUBER,
Have you formatted the card prior to using it? Also It might be worth checking the card with this program http://mympx.org/Downloads/p13_sectio... as if you bought from an auction site there could be a danger that the card is a fake , this program will give you a report on the cards performance. Let me know what you find.

I seen a Lexar 32GB Class 10 SDHC Card - 133x Speed

How about this one?
Micro SD 32GB Kingston with Adapter (Class-6)
What is the difference between SD and SDHC?-
Thats better! well the difference is the capacity, Sd will not store as much as sdhc (high capacity) I hope that helps?
Dave. -

Ok, SD = Secure Digital,
MicroSD= small Secure digital, so thats the size thing.
When refering to the capacity (just to confuse us all!) the important thing is the HC (High Capacity). So for the cameras you will need a "MicroSD SDHC" card, So long as it says "MicroSD" and has a large capacity ( up to 32G) then it will fit in the camera.
Does that help now? I had to read it twice just to make sure....

I've been doing some research on the card class question.
Found a .org that explains it pretty well here:
http://www.sdcard.org/developers/tech...
This site recommends class 4 or 6 for HD video recording with a normal bus.
They recommend class 10 for a high speed bus. -

I bought a sandisk 32GB Micro SDHC class 8 card and it only recorded initially (well up to about 2GB), with many stop/start flaky issues. Is this card compatible with the Contour GPS camera?
It was formatted via Windows...as FAT/32...should I have done this through the camera?-
Hi jg048012,
With the larger capacity cards you will ned to format them in the camera with the format button to make sure you get the best performance out of the card. One thing that does send in the warning bells is that I cannot find any reference to a class 8 card in sandisk products, was this a typo? If you could let me know ?

Hi gregconnors,
It will be down to the fake cards that show up as problems. This is because they are of such poor quality that they cannot handle the data being written to the card by the camera. HD footage contains an awful lot of data and will show a bad card up almost instantly. Genuine cards may be more expensive but they are worth it in the long run.

I can categorically confirm that the integral 32gb microsd class 4, does not work passed a few Gb in the 1080 hd, as I have 2, and 4 1080hd, access to a 5th. Bought through contour main dealer in the uk, fortunately in sdhc adaptor they work fine in my avchd Sony camcorders, so I can live with that.
Bought a 32gb Kingston microsd, class 4, tried that still can't get more than 16gb on the card, and the cameras are moody, strangely unreliable.
I'm wondering if I bought a gps and formatted in camera might at least the Kingston card be willing to play in the gps and maybe a1080hd?
Also is contour+ actually on sale yet? (where in the UK?)- view 9 more comments

Thats only one way we are considering doing it, I want to try the Contour+ to run an hdmi into an Atomos Ninja and record Pro Res off the Contour sensor using a SSD drive and car charger battery pack we can get 12hours on a drive.
Now I'm afraid your plan followed to the letter by me and my buddy has failed miserably with 1 partition, an empty, readily formatted Integral 32Gb card I got a red light on power up, although it went into record, but after the battery expired, the camera would put itself into record automatically even when the record slider was in standby, and all that recorded was 1 file, which was created with insertion of the new battery, stopped the next battery recording and the "new" file was there, put back into record, when that ran out and I repeated the process again, its locked up have to remove battery and replace, at which point it goes into record and removes the existing file and starts recording a new file. So only 1 file recorded.
My buddy who has the Kingston Card has marginally more success, but with the 1 partition format got no more than standard partitioning. The newly formatted card has a red led on power up, it goes into recording (using our battery cell/USB car charger) it cycles into record, and we have had it in a road car park all day running, here's the report, 'got the same result as last time (which was standard formatting no partition) I tested it: 5 files two 3.94 GB ~ @hrs each and readable, one corrupt 3.94Gb file (created/modified times suggest it's a 3 hr file, and two ,1Mb corrupt files with created/modified times the same as the end of the readable files.
The camera was unresponsive. Record light was red, but moving the slider and/or pressing the power button had no effect. I don't know what to do other than finding someone who can prove that a 32gb card works and getting explicit instructions from them.'
Which begs the question who has really got a 32 Gb card to work, moreover this thread is over 10months old, and I can't see an Official contour post, surely someone at Contour knows. Will a GPS work, or a + work with a 32 Gb card, which ones? I did see an official post that the Contour was designed before 32 GB cards were readily available, begging the question does anyone know (like Contour) if the camera is not capable of running a 32 Gb Card.
We have partitioned the Kingston card into 2 partitions, and a positive sign is that on power the card indicator is green, not red/orange for a change, we will test it with a 16Gb card, then see if a 2 partition 32gb provides anything more than 16Gb. -
-
Hi coolthinkingmedia,
If you are using a GPS or Contour+ then you format the card in the camera with the pinhole format button, If you use an HD then you need to use the computer to format the card. However if you have bought the cards from an auction site for a "good price" then you may have a duff set of cards. We have found that auctions sites are the place where you get the highest frequency of fake cards being distributed. This may be the case and why you are experiencing these issues.
So long as the cluster size on the card when formatted is 32768 Bytes then they should record ok. We find that when any genuine branded 32G card is used in the cameras and it has been formatted correctly , either in the camera or on a computer , then it will work. If there is any suspicion that the card is the issue then use this program http://mympx.org/Downloads/p13_sectio... it's a windows program but it will show up errors . Make sure that the card is formatted before using with this program.Let me know how you get on.
Cheers,
Dave. -

Frequently Asked Questions from http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/faq/
If you are a consumer experiencing technical issues with your SD product please contact the manufacturer directly for support. As the SD Association is a standards organization and does not make or sell any SD products we are unable to provide product support.
What is the SD Speed Class?
The SD Association has established standards that rate the minimum data transfer in SD, SDHC, SDXC, SDHC UHS-I and SDXC UHS-I memory cards and devices. The speed rates were established based on the needs of movie and video companies because video recording requires certain writing speeds when recording the data onto a memory card. The SD Speed Class and UHS Speed Class standardized the specification for both memory cards and devices in order to guarantee minimum writing speeds and deliver the best performance.
Return to Questions
What are the applications for Speed Class?
Class 2 : H.264 video recording, MPEG-4, MPEG-2 video recording
Class 4: MEPG-2 (HDTV) video recording, digital still camera (DSC) consecutive photo shooting
Class 6: Mega-pixel DSC consecutive photo shooting, professional video camera
Class 10: Full HD video recording, HD still picture consecutive shooting
Return to Questions
What is the CPRM?
CPRM - Content Protection for Recordable Media - provides the method of copyright protection for SD-Audio and SD Binding standards. This content protection and certification/authentication standard was jointly developed by 4C Entity LLC.
Return to Questions
Is CPRM applied to all data types stored on the SD memory card?
No, copy-protection is not mandatory for all data types and can be asserted selectively at the discretion of the content owner. CPRM technology, a copy protection mechanism, is embedded in all SD standards-based memory cards and can be used to protect copyrighted content such as most commercially distributed music and movie files. To use CPRM in SD memory cards, CPRM-compliant products such as SD-Audio players, SD-Video mobile phones or enabled devices such as a computer with CPRM-enabled SD slot or CPRM-enabled USB read/write are also required.
Return to Questions
Can you save data in different formats such as audio, video, still pictures and documents on a single SD memory card?
Yes, you can save data in any format as long as the card has sufficient memory capacity. However, to play or transfer the data you will need a device that is compatible with the appropriate data format such as SD-Audio, SD-Video and SD Document.
Return to Questions
What do you need to transfer data from a memory card to a computer?
Most computers are built with multiple ports for different data connection standards, including SD standards. If your computer is equipped with an SD slot, you can transfer data by simply inserting the SD memory card. If your computer does not have an SD slot, or is built to an earlier SD standard than your memory card, you can use a USB reader/writer or computer card adapter to transfer data from your memory card to your computer. Computer editing software for each type of data such as sound, music and still images also is needed.
Return to Questions
In terms of capacity, what SD standards will be available in the future?
Currently, three different SD card standards define a range of capacities from 8MB up to 2 Terabytes. Each memory card manufacturer, and not the SD Association, determines when it will introduce larger capacity cards into the marketplace.
Return to Questions
What is the service life of an SD memory card?
This depends on how your product in manufactured. SD standards-based memory cards, like most semiconductor cards, store information in flash memory. The current technology along with normal usage typically gives the card a lifespan of 10 years or more, allowing consumers to upgrade their devices for many years and reduce consumer electronic waste.
Return to Questions
What is the difference between the SD memory card and the miniSD/microSD memory cards?
Only the form factor, size, and number of pins and “with or without” of the write protect switch of the miniSD/microSD memory cards are different from the standard SD memory card. The logic and electronics of both the miniSD/microSD and the SD card are identical.
Return to Questions
Will the miniSD/microSD memory card replace the current SD memory card?
No. The miniSD/microSD standards were designed to meet mobile phone manufacturers' requirements for the smallest possible memory card size.
Return to Questions
My SD memory card does not seem work in my device, what should I do?
The SD Association is an organization developing SD standards. The SD Association does not manufacture any SD cards, but its members do so you should contact the memory card manufacturer. However, there are basic steps you may take:
Make sure you insert your SD card per instruction from your device's user manual
Note any error messages shown on your devices, and then check the user manual
Contact the SD memory card manufacturer for any assistance
Contact your retailer where you obtained the SD memory card, if an RMA process is required
Return to Questions
Is there a way to retrieve deleted pictures?
Please refer to your memory card manufacturer's instructions on how to retrieve deleted pictures. The SD Association does not supply the tools for photo retrieval.
Return to Questions
Where can I get the best SD memory card for my device, and what brand do you recommend?
SD standards-based memory cards are widely available at leading consumer outlets worldwide. You should follow your device's user manual for best capacity and speed class suitable for the device. The SD Association creates standards for SD memory cards but does not recommend SD memory card manufacturers.
Return to Questions
What is the right size SD memory card for me?
Please follow device's user's manual for best size (capacity) and speed class card suitable for the device.
Return to Questions
Are SD memory cards waterproof?
The specific characteristics of an SD standards-based memory card are dependent on the SD memory card manufacturers. Some card makers use unique manufacturing technology to make the cards waterproof as an added feature while others do not. Please check with the specific SD memory card manufacturer for card features.
Return to Questions
What is the warranty of my SD memory card?
Please check with the specific SD memory card manufacturer for product warranty.

Check-out means to write music data that has been recorded to a personal computer from CDs and EMD (and compressed by AAC and MP3 systems) to an SD memory card. Conversely, returning music data from an SD memory card to a personal computer is called Check-in. The number of times for checking-out music content recorded to a personal computer is limited to three. However, if the music content checked-out once is checked-in to a personal computer, it can then be checked-out again.

Are SD-Audio players manufactured by different companies mutually compatible?
If the SD-Audio players adopt the same compressed audio format standard, the players are compatible and can replay music.

Can SD-Audio record from MD?
No, not directly.

Can ATRAC3 format files be used with SD-Audio?
No, they cannot be used because the compression systems are different.

Check-out with an SD-Audio player is said to be up to three times but what does this mean?
Under the SDMI standard, except for music content added under conditions related to special usage methods, when copying music content, four copies can be made at one time. Therefore, with an SD-Audio player, the specification is such that one copy is saved in the personal computer and the remaining three copies can be checked-out to the SD memory card. Also, three copies or more can be rewritten by Checking-in from a SD memory card to a personal computer.

Hi Mikeebee,
This is an issue with the firmware of the camera and 32G cards. The card will be recorded on to despite the camera saying that it is full.
Cheers,
Dave -
