why won't the record switch on my waterproof case work?
I purchased my countour HD 1080p awhile back and just recently tried to use the waterproof case with it, the power button works fine when it is in the case but the record switch doesn't seem to work. Ive tried to figure it out but i can't.

Hey Corski,
The waterproof case uses a magnet to move the magnetic record switch inside the camera. The record slider on the camera will not physically move - but the camera should go into record mode when the slider on the waterproof case is slid forward. Is this happening?
-Keith-
corski1234 November 24, 2010 21:59no it is not, the camera doesn't go into record mode when i use it in the case. it doesn't give me the record "beep" or anything.EditDeleteRemove

OK - next step. Once in a while the record slider in the housing gets installed backwards. If you take the camera our of the WP case and look at the underside of the record slider of the WP case, you should see a silver magnet embedded in the underside of the slider. That magnet should be near the front end of the slider (front facing the lens port). Check it out and let me know what you find.
-Keith-
yea the magnet is near the front end of the slider

So it should work then. The mechanism is very simple. OK - you will need to contact tech support then. They will need to try you with a new waterproof case. I hate it when magnets go bad.

I'm having the same problem. Is this a chronic problem with the cases? I tried removing the slider and sliding the magnet directly on the camera. this works. I then put that camera back in the case and slid just the magnet over the case, this too turned on the camera. but when the slide assembly is installed the camera will not turn on. So is this a bad magnet? Can support just send me a new magnet or slider assembly?

We are still grappling with this issue. It looks to be a variance issue in the magnet strengths between the record slide on the waterproof case, and the magnetic switch in the camera. Most work fine. Some don't. Support can certainly try you with a new slider piece for your case. Another "trick" that has worked for many is to trim the from 2mm off the waterproof case's slider so it can travel further forward when pushed into record mode.
-Keith-
I had to put some paper folded up a few times (about 1/4 of an inch thick) in between the front of the cam and the case then close the case up against the paper , it will hold the cam all the way back ,then the switch will work

already contacted support, they're sending me an RMA to exchange the whole unit. recommending I shave material off a brand new unit that doesn't work seems lame.

Hey martys,
Agreed on shaving off the from of the slider is not ideal. Just throwing it out there as a possible option as it has helped others.

Case completely broke. Catastrophic failure. I am sending a pic.

After fumbling with this thing for hours, trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong, I turned to the FAQ only to learn that this has been an issue for at least 6 months (according to the date of this original posting) and not only has the problem not been solved, but they continue to ship these things, that don't work, without explanation.
Disapointed is an understatement.- view 1 more comment

On one hand, I'm happy to hear that Contour Support is willing to work with me to make sure the product works....in the end.
On the other hand, the fact remains, and my point is still that you've been aware of the problem for at least 6 months and are still shipping products that don't work. In my case, I ordered the camera and housing together and they were shipped together. Where's the quality control? If you know there's a problem, why aren't products being properly tested before shipping.
It's an inconvenience (at the very least) to the customer. I intended to use my camera this weekend, and can't until I jump through support hoops and/or make alterations to the product. And I wonder, if I attempt to "shave" sections of the slider off as suggested here, and it still doesn't work, is the company going to accept a return after I've made physical alterations?
Pretty unsatisfied at this point. -

Hi webs2061,
Every step to make sure that the case works as it should do are made during production, however we do accept that in mass production errors will occur and we will always do our best to rectify these errors when they happen. We have taken steps to correct these issues, but due to the quantity that were first produced,we have to deal with these issues on an individual basis. When items are ordered together , they are sent out together , but never tested together. I do not know of any supplier who will do that as it would create loads of " this has been opened !" shouts of discontent.
Dealing with support does not require any hoop jumping, a simple form to fill out, or phone call if you wish and it will be dealt with. If you do attempt a modification to see if it will work , this will not affect the support that you will receive. You can still contact support and request a replacement slider and one will be sent out to you. I hope that helps out .
Cheers,
Dave. -

Having the same issue. I just got my Contour a few days ago with a few accessories and I've never had this many problems with a new electronics product. Anyway, it appears that when you have the lid open and are holding down the camera the record switch seems to be a bit more consistent but still not consistent enough. You shouldn't have to have the case open anyway to turn operate the dang thing. Also, when the case is close, pressing the power button moves the camera slightly forward, which is probably why Contour is suggesting shaving the front of the switch a bit and why the guy had better success stuffing his case with paper. Both options are unacceptable. I bought the Contour primarily for use with the waterproof case for a rafting trip I have coming up in a few weeks. If the equipment cannot perform its basic function then I want a refund.

Just got my case which does not work correctly or as intended but I can get it to work in the following way:
1) switch camera itself RECORD before sliding into waterproof case
2) close case
3) now by toggling the waterproof case record on/off - it works (backwards as in record=stop-record, stop-record=record).
I found this because the case worked once in a blue moon so knew it was a magnet. Looks like it's not strong enough.
The only significant downside to this is there's no beep for record and stop-recording.- view 2 more comments

I had the same issue with mine and had help instantly. Contour had amazing help line and shipped right to my door. Anyone who expects them to test every unit is ridiculous thats just not going to happen, you have to expect some margin for error. Also if you bought a camera a couple days before a trip you should have planned more. It only took 3 days to get the new stuff to my door. One of the easiest warranties to deal with by far. Thank you!

Yea, I tried to switch with 3-4 other water proof casings the next day at REI and none worked right.
The good news is that Contour customer support contacted me the same day and shipped me a new (more powerful) magnet. Luckily I had a small screw driver (for sunglasses) and swapped out. Works perfectly now (after my trip). -

I had the same problem with my housing, too bad I tried the "remove 2mm" tip before thinking the problem through. I found that if I squeezed the housing as if trying to get the magnet closer to the camera in the housing, it would turn on. So, I removed the switch slider and pried out the magnet with a small screwdriver. Then a took some scotch tape and folded it up about six or seven layers thick to make a shim. Trimmed the shim to fit the magnet recess, and dropped in the shim. Put the magnet in on top of the shim and now the magnet is a little proud of the switch slider surface. Reinstalled the slider/switch assembly on the housing and it works fine now. I read an earlier post about magnets "going bad" which doesn't really happen unless you heat the magnet with a torch or something way too extreme for the housing to survive. Permanent magnets are for most intents indeed permanent. The magnet in the switch is quite strong, mine just needed a little closer fit. Try this if yours doesn't work, it's free and easy to try, and I'll bet it fixes the problem more often than not. If you can hold the magnet in your fingers with the camera in the housing and switch it on and off, then it probably just needs shimmed a little closer to the housing wall. My two cents worth...

Thanks Dave, I sent a note as you suggested. Working on Sunday...? You should take the day off, but I appreciate the FAST followup. Go have a beer or something now, you've earned it.

HI Jim Allen,
Yeah working on a sunday! I have been out filming though so I have had some rest .

Wish I'd seen this topic a month ago. I'm halfway through a South Pacific trip and using my cam and housing for the first time. I missed out on a lot of good footage in Hawaii and Samoa thanks to these crappy magnets. At least now I may be able to come up with a temp fix for Tonga and Fiji. Will definitely contact Support when I get home for the 'newer' magnets.

Hi ozspearo,
If you contact support they will do their best to get the replacement switch out to you where ever you are, if you know your itineracy then they should be able to get one to a hotel that you will be staying at. Let me know how you get on.
Cheers,
Dave. -

Thanks Dave. I'm moving around a bit so it may be hard, but I'll see what they say.

I've had the same issues as mentioned above. I've sent a message into support and am waiting on a response. If I purchased/picked mine-up mine through pointofviewcamers.com in Vancouver would I need to get a replacement part through them or Contour?
A little bummed that the majority of my footage from the weekend didn't actually get recorded and won't be able to get anymore until next year, but such is life I guess...
Thanks,
Don-
Hi Don,
Support will be the ones that will get you sorted out as its something that we can deal with. You will hear back from my colleagues within 24hours. Let me know how you get on.

I was contacted by support the very next day and they said they sent out a new slider. Great response time though I still have not received it as of yet but am hopefully it will arrive this week.
Though a new issue has arisen with the mount on the waterproof housing and its potential connection to my handlebar/pole mount. I purchased a handlebar/pole mount assuming that the slider design would fit both the waterproof housing and the camera itself. The camera itself fits into the handlebar/pole mount still but not the waterproof housing. I hope this wasn't the original design and intention.
I was bummed out before but now Im quite disappointed. Is there any way this can be rectified? I'd prefer not to use a scalpel and cut any material away for it to fit but I can't figure any other options.
Great responses from the people at Contour, but the products have been far below my original expectations.

Arghhh. This is happening to me. Usually the switch doesn't work the first time the camera is powered up, but works after that.
Support wants me to ship the whole case to them and they said it takes 72 hours to turn the shipment around once they get it.
I am leaving on a snorkeling trip in a week. I will have to just deal with it until I get back. -

Just received the magnet in the mail today. Noticeably larger and stronger then the old magnet. But again the same problem persists. Yes the magnet was installed with the magnet towards the lends port and I even tried removing and flipping the magnet inside the actual slider to see if it would help. I was about to start shaving off material, but then I attempted to activate the slider while holding the magnet right against the actual record slider while not in the waterproof case. Again this produced no results with the slider not moving to the record position.
Is it possible that the record slider magnet component can be to blame?
I want to take the camera apart to investigate the internal components but don't want to cause more harm then good. Suggestions on this?
Also is there any reply to my other recently discovered issue involving the XL handlebar/pole mount not fitting the slider on the waterproof case.
I have a surf trip starting this Friday, so time is of the essence.
Don M.-
Hi Don M,
There is a possibility that the internal switch is to blame, I would say to contact the guys in support and they will be able to assist you. In regard to the other question, can you post up a link for me as i cannot find the one that you refer to.
Cheers,
Dave. -

I had this problem from the start.
Solution: push the camera's slider forwards into the record position FIRST then install it in the WP case.
Then turn the camera on and start shooting.
One thing to remember! The WP case slider now works in REVERSE. So backwards to record and forwards to stop. Been using it this way for over a year now. -
-
So the problem has been rectified. The camera will record with the new magnet. I was unaware that the actual slider on the housing did not move the slider on the camera. My mistake which support did correct with the new magnet.
Though the handlebar/pole mount still will not fit the waterproof housing. It was apparently not designed to be compatible with it, which is somewhat unfortunate since I had a few mounting plans involving a ski pole and the housing while in the surf. In the future you guys definitely need too list which products are/aren't compatible on the packaging.
Anyhow, great support response and it should be working as of now. Still somewhat frustrated with the amount of time and lost footage it took to get here.
Don M-
Hi Endless_Summer,

My case switch didnt work on my case that i just got as well. how annoying....
i noticed when i slipped my Contour hd1080 into the case it would start recording.
i took off the top switch by unscrewing the four screws. i first tried to flip over the magnet.. this didnt work.
I then tried it with it flipped and rotated 90 degrees wola! it works...
So i think this whole problem was about the polarity of the magnet and not its location or strength. -
-
Hi all
I got mine to work by adding a small packing strip to the front of the camera case this makes sure the camera is aligned to the back of the case and cant slip forward,
I also removed the magnet and added some padding behind the magnet making it sit proud.
